Position Details
The Physical Plant team is responsible for operations and maintenance of Wesleyan buildings and grounds. The team includes carpenters and general maintenance trades who maintain and repair campus buildings and associated equipment.

Reporting to the Assistant Director of Building Trades the carpenter is responsible for performing highly skilled carpentry work.

Responsibilities Include:

  • Performs highly skilled carpentry tasks in accordance with standard trade practices
  • Makes estimates of time, personnel and material required on assigned tasks
  • Keeps necessary records
  • Patches, paints, stains and repairs walls, ceilings, trim, floors, doors and building exteriors
  • Repairs doors and related hardware, cabinets, windows and associated hardware
  • Fabricate and/or install shelves and cabinets
  • Performs alterations, repairs and maintenance of structures and facilities including porch and deck construction
  • Repairs roofs (including shingle removal and replacement; repairing and replacing substrate, soffit and fascia repair)
  • Repairs and/or replace floors (including plywood sublfloor, tile, carpet, vinyl and hardword floors)
  • Prepares concrete forms (including manual excavation) and construction; transports and installs drywall, lumber, sheet goods, concrete materials, doors, windows, siding, roofing supplies, floor and ceiling tiles, paint cans, buckets and other related equipment tools and supplies.

Working Conditions:
Physical Demands/Working Conditions include Walking, Driving, Balancing, Climbing, Carrying, Pulling/Pushing, Reaching, Repetitive Movement, Sitting, Standing, Twisting, Bending, Lifting (50-100 lbs.), Climbing ladders, and working from platforms and heights as needed, with our without reasonable accommodations.

This position is full-time, 40 hours per week, 52 weeks per year, and is in the physical plant bargaining unit. Typical work hours are Monday – Friday 7:30 am – 4:30 pm with 1 hour lunch break

This position may be required to work frequent overtime shifts which may include returning to work between shifts, nights, holidays and weekends as directed.

This position is classified as essential personnel and as such are required to report to work/remain at work even if classes are cancelled and the campus is working on limited operations in an emergency.


Minimum Qualifications
High school graduate or equivalent and a minimum of Four (4) years of experience in the carpentry trade area including a minimum of Two (2) years of the General Experience must have been performing skilled trade functions in the carpentry craft.

Minimum Qualifications-Substitutions Allowed:
1. Graduation from a vocational or technical school with a diploma designating completion of subject requirements in carpentry may be substituted for two (2) years of the General Experience. 2. Experience performing technical duties within the carpentry trade on a military base, aircraft carrier or large compound may be substituted for the General and Special Experience on a year for year basis.

Working knowledge of residential and commercial building construction including building envelope, roofing, mechanical, electrical, plumbing systems

Working knowledge of applicable local, state and national building codes and other regulations applicable to area of responsibility

Demonstrated knowledge and proper use of personal protective equipment related to being a Carpenter

Knowledge of Material Safety Data Sheets and proper waste disposal methods.

Proper application of Lockout Tag out, confined space, and other safety procedures.

Demonstrated ability to read, interpret and build to blueprints, drawings and specifications.

Effective communication skills.

Demonstrated history of satisfied customer service and customer follow-up skills.

Desktop computer skills including the fundamental use of internet, e-mail and
maintenance management systems.

Possession and continuous maintenance of valid State of Connecticut driver’s license and safe driving skills.

Ability to provide your own basic tools of the trade for a carpenter (e.g. including but not limited to – Tape measure, hammer, screwdrivers, pliers, wrenches, saws, cutting tools, tool bag, etc. )

Ability to perform the responsibilities of the position listed above with or without reasonable accommodations

Ability to meet the scheduling needs of the position as described above

Preferred Qualifications
Experience installing and repairing flooring ranging in a variety of materials. Experience installing and repairing acoustical ceilings. Experience with repairs to a variety of roofing systems. Experience with finish trim work, including soffits and tile work. Experience reading, understanding and interpreting blueprints. Experience in all types of furniture repairs.
