Summary of Job Duties:The Food Systems and Food Safety Instructor is a full-time position in the Department of Horticulture (40 hrs/week). This person will serve as a project leader and cooperate with Dr. Amanda Philyaw Perez on the Local, Regional and Safe Foods Team.

The successful candidate provides outreach, education and technical assistance to Arkansas produce growers, community stakeholders and county extension agents for the FDA Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA) regulations and supports future efforts to secure grant funding and conduct research on food safety and food systems development topics impacting the specialty crop industry. Identifies, enrolls, and trains produce growers, stakeholders, and county agents in food systems and safety training. The Post Doc will support, develop, and implement training and technical assistance with stakeholders working to support food systems development across the value chain with an emphasis on value-added food product development. The successful candidate will support the local foods program goals, conduct survey research with clientele, and prepare papers for scientific conferences and publication.

Job Duties:
Manages the coordination of food systems and food safety training workshops. Implements the goals and objectives of projects and direct day-to-day project operation, including managing implementation of project activities, coordination with other agencies, and ensuring that reports and documentation are submitted. Prepares proposals to regional and national conferences for food systems and food safety. Takes initiative, self-directed as well as the ability to work effectively in a team. Provides input on development of Southern Center add-on curricula related to food safety curriculum. Some leadership responsibilities related to grant deliverables for grants on food manufacturing with food entrepreneurs, microgreens production and safety, fruit and vegetable value-added product development, and FSMA Produce Safety Rule grower training. Assists with technical assistance management, tracking, and evaluation. Prepares educational materials and develops web content, promotional materials, press releases, etc. Monitors program implementation, assists collaborators and county extension agents, coordinates activities with team. Assists with managing the local, regional, and safe foods team.

Skills:
Excellent written & verbal communication skills. Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, data management, & email programs. A high level of technical competence in food safety, pathogens impacting the produce industry and manufactured foods, and specialty crop production methods for growing, harvesting, and holding produce. Ability to develop & deliver quality presentations. Ability to exercise initiative, make sound judgments, & work without close supervision. Ability to relate & respond to the needs of supervisors, subordinates, & clientele.

Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications:

A Master’s degree in Food Science, Food Microbiology, Public Health, or Food Safety is required.

Skills & Knowledge:

Demonstrated competence to independently manage programs is needed. Excellent communications skills (written and oral), publications, presentations, educational curriculum development, and extensive experience with web and social media presence.

Preferred Qualifications:

On-farm, field experience working with specialty crop growers or working in food science or food manufacturing. Understanding of current issues related to the specialty crop industry and food safety. Certifications for Train-the-Trainer in FSMA Produce Safety Rule or Preventive Controls for Human Food. Grants management and/or writing experience.
