The Department of Literature in the College of Arts and Humanities invites applications and nominations for the position of Assistant Professor of English in Gullah Geechee Literature & Cultures. Applicants may focus more broadly on African American literature, Africana Studies, literature of the Lowcountry or American South, global anglophone literature, ethnic studies, folklore, indigenous studies, or media studies, but should also have experience or interest in Gullah Geechee literature and cultures. The successful candidate will be part of a cluster hire that includes faculty in history and other disciplines, all of whom will contribute to developing an interdisciplinary Gullah Geechee Institute through activities such as public engagement projects and the pursuit of grant funding. The home campus for this position will be the Statesboro campus although teaching opportunities will be available on all campuses as well as online.

Position Description. Reporting to the Chair of Literature, the Assistant Professor of English in this position will have teaching, research, and service responsibilities. The position is an academic (ten-month), tenure-track appointment, and the salary is competitive and commensurate with qualifications and experience.

Required Qualifications:
  • Earned PhD in English, or a closely related field, by August 1, 2022
  • Evidence of effective teaching
  • Evidence of an active research agenda
  • Willingness to engage with institutional student success initiatives.
  • Commitment to engaging to engaging with best practice initiatives in instruction and pedagogy, mentoring, and curriculum design and development.
  • Demonstrated commitment to advancing a strong and growing research and scholarship agenda and the production of research/creative activities as appropriate to the discipline.

    Preferred Qualifications:
  • Engagement in interdisciplinary or collaborative efforts across disciplines

    Conditions of Employment:
  • Must be authorized to work in the United States for the duration of employment without assistance from the institution.
  • All work for Georgia Southern University must be completed while the employee is physically present in the state of Georgia, unless specifically authorized by the university for a specific purpose and limited period of time within current policy.
  • Faculty are expected to contribute to the vibrant university community by engaging students, participating in events, and performing other responsibilities on-campus
  • Faculty may be required to teach, conduct research, or perform service duties on any of the three campuses. Georgia Southern provides accessible transportation options between campuses.
