Definition:
The Information Systems Department is seeking a talented individual to fill the position of Principal IT Architect. The successful candidate will act as technical expert for the educational technology area to perform project management duties; and to provide highly complex professional support to College leadership, faculty, or staff. Comprised of two colleges, West Valley College and Mission College, we are located in the heart of Silicon Valley. Our staff and faculty are among the most qualified in the state and our students appreciate our two colleges for our friendly staff and supportive atmosphere. Under the direction of the Director of Educational Technology Services, or the Associate Vice Chancellor of Information and Educational Technology, the incumbent performs the most complex analytical and technical activities associated with College-wide servers infrastructure, or application projects. The Principal IT Architect will assume a leadership role in providing outstanding technical support to members of the college communities. The Principal IT Architect will provide expertise, skill and knowledge related to the design, development, testing, enhancement, and support of College applications, smart classrooms and labs, cybersecurity practices and methods, virtualization, disaster recovery, and accessibility standards as applicable to Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). Additionally, the successful candidate will have an opportunity to influence next generation design with building out new instructional spaces. Assignment:
100% of full time, 37.5 hours per week, 12 months per year, with anticipated start date of January 24, 2022. Schedule may change to include some evening or weekend hours, as needed. This position is represented by the West Valley-Mission Classified Employees Association (WVMCEA), Office, Technical & Business Services Employee Unit.

Work Location: District Information Systems department, with offices on the campuses of both Mission College, Santa Clara, and West Valley College, Saratoga.

Salary and Benefits:
Anticipated Hiring Range:
  • $13,729-$14,286 monthly (WVMCEA Salary Schedule, Range 98, Steps A-C).
  • Annual salary step increases to maximum of salary range, $16,403 (WVMCEA Salary Schedule, Range 98, Step G).

Minimum Qualifications:
Any combination of experience and education that would provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the required knowledge and abilities would be:
  1. Understanding of, and sensitivity to the diverse academic, socio-economic, ethnic, religious and cultural backgrounds, disability, and sexual orientation of community college students, faculty and staff; AND
  2. Equivalent to a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with major course work in information technology or a related field; AND
  3. Four years of responsible advanced journey experience similar to Senior Information Technology Analyst with the West Valley-Mission Community College District.


Examples of Duties and Responsibilities:
Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:
  • Coordinate the technical implementation and on-going administration of enterprise-wide cross-platform large-scale systems.
  • Perform cross-functional, multidisciplinary technical oversight to include evaluation of project work, staff, methods and associated procedures related to enterprise-level systems.
  • Design enterprise-wide systems architecture and integration strategies across multiple platforms, technologies or software systems.
  • Meet with vendors to design and develop hardware and software specifications, solutions and strategies.
  • Define accessibility requirements and assure implementation of a program to improve technology staff knowledge and support for faculty with ADA strategies for instruction.
  • Lead complex troubleshooting of urgent, enterprise-wide technical problems.
  • Consult with administrators and other department personnel to provide guidance and technical direction for proposed enterprise technical solutions.
  • Recommend goals and strategies for technology projects and solutions in response to district initiatives.
  • Participate in budget preparation.
  • Lead planning activities with college departments, outside agencies and systems vendors, and staff from multiple disciplines.
  • Participate on committees; answer questions and provide expertise related to area of assignment.
  • Build and maintain positive working relationships with co-workers, other district employees and the public using principles of good customer service.
  • Foster an environment that embraces diversity, integrity, trust and respect.
  • Be an integral team player, which involves flexibility, cooperation and communication.
  • Perform related duties as assigned.
