DEPARTMENT: Student Health & Counseling Services

DEPARTMENT SUMMARY: Student Health and Counseling Services is a fully integrated healthcare/wellness facility. The psychologist/counselor in this position will work collaboratively as part of a multi-disciplinary team that includes Primary Care, Pharmacy, Nutrition Services, and Health and Wellness Services.

Under the supervision of the Director of Counseling Services, the psychologist/counselor will provide a full range of culturally sensitive clinical and non-clinical services for the students residing in California State University, Sacramento residence halls. Clinical services will include assessment/evaluation, individual and group counseling, crisis intervention, and case management. In addition to direct clinical services, the psychologist/counselor will provide outreach, training, and consultation on topics of mental health and wellness to students, faculty, and staff in the eight residence halls at Sac State. The clinician in this position will work out of the Counseling Services satellite office in Housing.


Direct Counseling/Clinical Services (60%)

Provide direct clinical services including, assessment/diagnosis, short-term individual and group psychotherapy, crisis intervention and follow-up, case management, collaboration with psychiatrists and other medical providers, and referral and consultation with off-campus service providers.

Outreach and Program Development Services (20%)

Develop and implement programs including: presentations, workshops, prevention projects, training, seminars, and other outreach services as requested by Residence Life staff.

Consultation (20%)

Provide consultation to faculty, staff, and administrators in Residence Life regarding issues that affect the mental health and psychological well-being of students. Provide in-service training to faculty, administrators, and student leaders on mental health and developmental issues.

  1. Ph.D. or Psy.D in clinical or counseling psychology from an APA accredited program, or master's degree in marriage and family therapy or clinical social work from accredited training program.
  2. Licensed or license-eligible by the California Board of Behavioral Health Examiners or Board of Psychology. If not licensed, must obtain licensure within one year of hire.
  3. Demonstrated ability to conduct culturally sensitive short-term individual therapy, group therapy, and crisis intervention.
  4. Experience working with issues pertinent to a diverse student population with a broad spectrum of psychological/mental health concerns, experience and knowledge working with high-risk clients.
  5. Demonstrated ability to conduct intake evaluations, clinical-diagnostic assessments, case conceptualization and treatment plan formulation. Knowledge of DSM-5 diagnostic criteria.
  6. Demonstrated ability to provide urgent care and crisis intervention.
  7. Demonstrated effectiveness in providing clinical services and support to underrepresented and marginalized populations, including students with diverse identities based on ethnicity, race, gender identity, sexual preference, disability, religion, and socio-economic status.
  8. Demonstrated commitment to the development of ongoing multicultural competency in professional and clinical contexts.
  9. Demonstrated ability to develop and implement outreach programs.
  10. Experience providing consultation on mental health issues and concerns.
  11. Up to date knowledge of applicable laws and ethics pertaining to mental health treatment
  12. Excellent interpersonal, written, and oral communication skills.
  13. Strong planning and organizational skills.
  14. Ability to collaborate with a multidisciplinary team of mental health and primary care providers within an integrated health care facility.

  2. Experience working in residential setting.
  3. Demonstrated knowledge and experience in understanding the unique mental health needs and concerns of underserved and BIPOC students.
  4. Interest and expertise in working with, non-traditional and first- generation students.

This appointment is a full-time, temporary 12-month in the Student Services Professional-Academic Related classification. This is not a probationary position and does not establish consideration for subsequent appointments or any further appointment rights. However, this appointment may be renewed annually dependent upon satisfactory performance and program needs.

The position will accrue vacation credit at the rate of 16 hours per month.
