Industrial Hygienist (AA/S Exempt II)

Classification Title: Administrative Analyst/Specialist - Ex II

Job Summary:
Under the general direction of the Director of Environmental Health and Safety (EH&S), the Industrial Hygienist serves in a leadership role and provides expert advice to support academic and business objectives with due consideration of occupational health and safety laws, federal and state regulations, and good practices. Will serve as the campus chemical hygiene officer. Will lead and conduct accident and incident investigations; provide advice on safety matters; develop and implement general safety programs; develop and conduct safety training; review and analyze safety aspects of planned and ongoing experiments and advise researchers and students on improved safety conditions and devices.


FLSA: Exempt - This position is covered by health benefits, and is exempt, (not eligible for overtime compensation) according to the Fair Labor Standards Act.

Department Information:
The office of Environmental Health and Safety (EH&S) works to assure safe and healthful environments for all segments of the campus population, through programs of information and education, review and monitoring, technical consultation, and provision of direct services.

EH&S provides the University community the services and training needed to ensure safety and environmental responsibility.

EH&S is also responsible for developing programs to ensure compliance with applicable state and federal health, safety and environmental regulations, and campus policies on environmental health and safety.


Minimum Qualifications:
Entry to this classification requires general knowledge and skills in the applicable administrative and/ or program field with a foundational knowledge of public administration principles, practices, and methods. This foundation would normally be obtained through a bachelor’s degree and/or equivalent training and administrative work experience involving study, analysis, and/or evaluation leading to the development or improvement of administrative policies, procedures, practices, or programs.


Required Qualifications:
1. Experience in completion of hazard assessments for laboratory, shop and facility maintenance activities.
2. Significant experience preparing and presenting EH&S trainings, recordkeeping and reporting.
3. Experience using typical Industrial Hygiene instrumentation, e.g., sound level meter, PID, 4-channel gas analyzer, personal sample pumps.
4. Experience conducting accident and incident investigations.
5. Possess knowledge of applicable regulations and consensus standards for occupational health and safety including Cal/OSHA, NFPA, ANSI, CA Fire Code.
6. Knowledge of appropriate spill response procedures for laboratory quantities of hazardous materials.
7. Knowledge/understanding and experience in identification, evaluation, and control of hazards associated with chemical handling, storage, transportation, use and disposal in a research university environment.
8. Knowledge and experience in a broad range of building engineering principles.
9. Strong hazard recognition and risk assessment skills for laboratory, shop, field research and maintenance activities.
10. Expertise with PC-based applications including word processing, spreadsheets and databases.
11. Strong written and oral communication skills.
12. Interpersonal communication skill in working with individuals at all levels within and outside the organization, including conflict resolution and problem-solving skills.
13. Organizational and time management skills; ability to prioritize and coordinate work as needed.

Preferred Qualifications:
17. Bachelor’s degree in Occupational Safety and Health, Physical/Life Science or Engineering.
18. Certified Industrial Hygienist., Certified Safety Professional.
19. Five years professional experience developing and managing EH&S programs, including chemical hygiene, in a higher education and/or research laboratory setting.
20. Completion of 40-hour Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response (HAZWOPER) training.


Physical Demands:
Ability to wear personal protective clothing (PPE).

Ability to occasionally perform lifting, carrying, bending, stooping, kneeling, crawling, reaching, and climbing.

Ability to occasionally maneuver, position, lift and carry up to 50lbs.


Required Licenses/Certifications:
Valid Driver’s License and maintenance of safe driving record required.
