The Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Minnesota Twin Cities seeks candidates for a non-tenure-track teaching assistant professor. The appointment is expected to be at the teaching assistant professor level, but in exceptional cases applicants may be considered for appointment as a teaching associate professor or a teaching professor.

The person in this position will teach up to six undergraduate and mixed undergraduate-graduate courses per academic year in the areas of manufacturing, machine design and computer aided design as well as courses related to those topics including system dynamics, control systems and vibrations. The teaching faculty member is expected to prepare and deliver lectures, develop laboratory exercises, prepare homework assignments, quizzes and exams, hold office hours, assess student work, supervise teaching assistants and manage the administration of the courses they are assigned to teach. In addition, the person in this position will be involved in the continuing improvement of courses, the development of new curriculum for the department and will be engaged in appropriate department service activities including curriculum-related department committees.

Applicants are expected to have, by January 1, 2022, a Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering or a closely related discipline. Applicants are to have demonstrated the ability to teach university-level engineering courses at the graduate and undergraduate levels. The applicant’s experience and documented teaching activities must demonstrate a strong potential to enhance the department’s teaching mission. Experience as lead instructor in one or more university-level mechanical engineering courses is preferred as is an applicant with industry experience that they could bring into the classroom. In addition, candidates must have the ability to teach effectively to a diverse group of students.

This position is a 9-month academic appointment that receives full benefits for 12 months. There are opportunities to teach in the summer session, which will be compensated separately. Starting salary is commensurate with experience, and annual salary increases will be on the same basis as for the other faculty in the department. The initial appointment will be for one-year. Following the first year and after a performance review, there will be an option of continuing appointments with up to three-year renewable contracts.

The Department of Mechanical Engineering is home to 43 faculty, 333 graduate students, and 488 undergraduate students. Research in the department addresses the needs of the future, and includes applications to human health, energy production and efficiency, the environment, and transportation.  The department is part of the College of Science and Engineering, a highly interdisciplinary college comprised of 12 departments covering engineering, physical sciences, and mathematics.
