The Welch Medical Library seeks to hire aLibrarian III to provide research and information services in support of an exciting new partnership betweenJohns Hopkins University (JHU)andUniversity of California, San Francisco (UCSF):the Opioid Industry Documents Archive.The Archive is a digital repository of publicly disclosed documents from recent judgments, settlements, and ongoing lawsuits concerning the opioid crisis. The Archive leverages extraordinary expertise within JHU and UCSF in library science, information technology, and digital archiving. It also relies on scholarship focused on many dimensions of the opioid epidemic, ranging from the history of medicine to pharmaceutical policy to clinical care. From Johns Hopkins University, the project involves the Bloomberg School of Public Health’s Center for Drug Safety and Effectiveness; Welch Medical Library; Institute of the History of Medicine; and Sheridan Libraries’ Digital Research and Curation Center.

This individual will work as a Librarian and Archive expert with faculty, staff, researchers, and students in the Schools of Medicine, Public Health, Nursing, and the Johns Hopkins Health System, and with researchers and users outside of Johns Hopkins who want to access and use the Archive.

The successful applicant will be able to take advantage of a highly flexible work environment, build partnerships with user communities primarily engaged in public health, opioid research, substance abuse, public policy, and related fields, and provide outreach on the Archive to the Johns Hopkins community and beyond. They will also have a demonstrated track record of self-motivation, strong interpersonal and collaboration skills, and a personal commitment to excellence and innovation. This individual will join the Welch Medical Library team with a focus on providing services related to the Archive and will work collaboratively with Archive colleagues at JHU and UCSF. The position reports to the Director of the Welch Medical Library in close collaboration with Dr. Caleb Alexander, the Johns Hopkins Principal Investigator of the Archive and Professor of Epidemiology and Medicine at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Provide a broad range of in-person and online user education programs, provide reference and instructional services for the Archive
  • Promote use of the Archive and publicize the Archive locally, regionally, nationally, and internationally
  • Develop research and user-guides for accessing and searching the Archive
  • Provide direct assistance to users via email, and in-person and virtual consultation
  • Work collaboratively and collegially with colleagues to support the Library’s and the Archive’s vision, mission, and strategic priorities
  • Explore new areas for Archive content development and expand on existing Archive strengths, working in close coordination with other Archive staff and colleagues
  • Provide metrics and analysis on use of the Archive
  • Serve on library and departmental committees and/or task forces as appropriate.
  • Work on additional initiatives dependent on library needs / candidate’s interest and expertise
  • Represent the Library and the Archive at national meetings and through scholarship

Minimum Qualifications (Mandatory):

  • Master’s Degree from an ALA-accredited school of library and information science, informatics, archive management, or other appropriate degree
  • 3 years’ professional library experience working in a health sciences or biomedical library or affiliated clinical/research environment

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in an academic health sciences library or archive

  • Demonstrated interest or background in public health or historical research
  • Demonstrated interest or background in digital archival management and use
  • Creativity in approaches to active adult learner engagement
  • Demonstrated interest in using emerging technologies and software to create solutions that address the evolving information needs of a research enterprise
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and collaboratively with a diverse population of faculty/staff, students, and colleagues
  • Evidence of professional initiative and problem-solving skills
  • Excellent analytical, interpersonal, time management, organizational and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills; demonstrated ability to communicate effectively both in person and virtually using a variety of media and technologies

This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
