Research Engineer – Embedded Controls

The University of North Carolina at Charlotte is seeking applications for a Research Engineer – Embedded Controls position for the College of Engineering working with the Energy Production & Infrastructure Center (EPIC). EPIC is a university-industry partnership that meets the education and research needs for a safe, reliable, sustainable energy future. EPIC enhances the available technical workforce, advances technology, and facilitates strategic industry-university collaboration for the global energy industry while supporting the Carolinas’ economic and energy security development.

Minimum Qualifications: The minimum requirements for this position are as follows: MS Electrical and/or Computer Engineering (BS with extensive experience will also be considered), 2-5 years of experienced with MS degree in Electrical or Computer Engineering, 7-10 years of experience with BS degree in Electrical or Computer Engineering, and the candidate must be proficient with simulation tools such as MATLAB Simulink and/or PSIM while having experience with coding in C/C++ and FPGA programming tools.

Essential Job Duties: The purpose of the Embedded Control Research Engineer is to enhance the EPIC Power Electronics team by providing knowledge in control algorithm design, control hardware and software development employing extensive experience in Control Theory and its application in embedded controllers for power electronic products. The successful candidate will be a team player with excellent communication skills and proficient in working with various real-time operating systems. The Embedded Control Research Engineer will be responsible for designing and developing real-time applications predominantly used to control power electronic converters and equipment. Collect, document, and refine the requirements of the power electronic converter application and develop associated control specifications for the same. Design and reduce to operation real time control solutions (software and hardware) that conform to the specifications. The Embedded Control Research Engineer is responsible for the supervision of graduate students during project activities, and active production of research in the context of executed projects and independently.
