Job Description:

Amherst College invites applications for the Network and Telecommunications Technician position. The Network and Telecommunications position is a full-time, year-round position, job group and level PT-1. Given Amherst's distinction as one of the most diverse liberal arts colleges in the country, the successful candidate will demonstrate the ways in which they bring value to and will work towards supporting a broadly diverse community.

The IT department delivers wired and wireless access to the campus network and beyond from approximately 80 buildings and many outdoor areas. IT operates and maintains a private branch exchange and unified communication system for office and public telephones, a substantial inventory of inside plant and outside plant fiber optic and copper cabling, and a variety of telecommunication programs and services.

Summary of Duties and Responsibilities

  • The position is responsible for building and maintaining voice communication solutions for the college community. This requires installation, maintenance, and support of TDM and VoIP telephone equipment and services delivered from a Siemens HiPath 4000; development, maintenance, and support of voicemail, unified messaging, and call processing applications delivered from an AVST CXE.

  • The Technician is the primary performer of telephone moves, adds, and changes (MACs)

  • The Technician plays a key role in the installation, configuration, problem-solving, maintenance, and support of the College's IT communications infrastructure including: installation and maintenance of Aruba switches and a GPON passive optical network to support the specific communication requirements of computers, printers, wireless access points, VoIP phones, door access systems, building management systems, and vending/ laundry; installation and maintenance of wireless access points; troubleshooting OSP fiber optic cabling, OSP telephone copper cabling, and ISP fiber, ISP Category 5e and 6 copper, and ISP RG6 coax.

Qualifications
Required:
  • High school diploma plus additional specialized training in a relevant technical field.
  • Experience required in enterprise telecommunication systems, Ethernet networks, 802.11(a/b/g/n) wireless networks with a controller-based architecture; fiber optic and copper cabling protocols and standards.
  • Commitment to working with a diverse and inclusive community

  • Ability to interact professionally, communicate effectively both verbally and in writing, and work effectively in an environment involving changes in priorities and deadlines.
  • Must have a valid driver's license and be able to walk across campus, climb up and down stairs and ladders, stand and kneel, limited lifting up to 60 lbs., and access equipment and cabling in basements and attics, on rooftops, in steam tunnels and manholes, and on construction/job sites.
  • Successful completion of a pre-employment physical and lift test


Preferred:
  • Associate's degree and 3 - 5 years' experience preferred.
