The University of Florida's Area Health Education Centers, which has been part of UF’s Health Science Center for over thirty years now, is seeking a Program Director to assume the leadership of this program with a 0.30 FTE commitment to this effort. AHEC focuses on academic and community partnerships for developing a health care workforce to best meet the needs of Florida’s diverse population, particularly those who are disadvantaged and medically underserved. UF AHEC also provides tobacco prevention and treatment training, systems change consultation and support for health care facilities, and direct cessation services as an integral part of Tobacco Free Florida. UF AHEC has a 37-county service area, spanning from Marion and Volusia Counties to the south and then covering all of north central Florida and west throughout the Florida Panhandle.

UF AHEC receives over $5,000,000 annually from the Florida Department of Health (tobacco settlement funding) and from HRSA for directing, managing and evaluating the statewide Model AHEC Program. Over 75% of the funding is distributed to affiliated AHEC Centers (four non-profit organizations originally developed by UF AHEC) via subcontracts to complete the required activities and defined services within their geographic regions.

The AHEC Program Director serves as the Principal Investigator for the federal grant and state contract, and thus has leadership responsibilities for both. Along with that comes opportunities to be involved in state and national AHEC organizations focused on the AHEC mission. This position reports to the Senior Associate Dean for Educational Affairs, UF COM.

  • Further develop and chair a statewide Advisory Board for the Federal grant.
  • Participate in designated statewide and federal conference calls, such as required calls with our HRSA project manager, statewide Program Directors’ calls, etc.
  • Supervise two long-standing Associate Directors (Research Administration and Education and Training), which would involve ongoing knowledge of their programs and performance.
  • Review and approve contracts and other documents through the UF system, such as purchases, travel, effort reporting, and annual space allocations and inventory.
  • Assist with connecting AHEC services and opportunities with the Preceptorship Director, Health Systems Science Domain Directors, and other key leaders within the COM/HSC.
  • Provide COM input and expertise to the writing of the 2022-2027 federal grant as well as for other grant and service opportunities that arise (COVID and/or Opioid education).
  • Participate in select tobacco leadership calls and meetings, such as attending statewide Tobacco Advisory Council meetings and/or meeting with DOH leadership.
  • Establish working relationships with UF AHEC’s four Center Directors and strive for a knowledge of their specific regions, unique strengths, and opportunities.
