York University - Appointment of Dean of the Faculty of Health

Founded in 1959 on the Traditional Territory of the Anishinabek Nation, the Haudenosaunee Confederacy, and the Huron-Wendat, York is a leading international teaching and research university, and a driving force for positive change. Empowered by a welcoming and diverse community with a uniquely global perspective, we are creating knowledge for a better future, and preparing our students for their long-term careers and personal success.

York University is the 3rd largest in Canada with 55,000+ students, including 10,000+ international students (from 172 countries), 7,000 committed faculty and staff members, and over 325,000 alumni worldwide. York currently has two campuses in the Greater Toronto Area (Keele and Glendon), two downtown Toronto sites for learning in law and business, and international campuses in Hyderabad, India and Las Nubes, Costa Rica.  We will soon be opening our vibrant new long-awaited Markham Campus in York Region.  The University is home to 11 Faculties and 25 organized research units, and international partnerships with 280+ universities in 70+ countries.

Established in 2006, the Faculty of Health continues on an exciting trajectory of success, fulfilling its mission to enhance human health, health equity, health care and wellbeing, during a period of unprecedented uncertainty. Home to 10,000+ students, 200+ full-time faculty, and 20,000+ alumni globally, the Faculty delivers on its mission through creative and world leading ideas, education, and strategic partnerships for the public good. Offering various undergraduate, graduate and professionally oriented programs in Psychology (ranked in the top 10 nationally), Kinesiology & Health Science (#1 in Canada), Nursing, Health Policy & Management, Critical Disability Studies, Neuroscience, and Global Health, the Faculty is committed to excellence in research, teaching and learning, and community service. From world class vision research, to physical and mental health, to policy changes from local to global, our Faculty is distinguished by an interdisciplinary environment that places us at the forefront of bold discoveries that advance health and health sciences, most visibly in our five major research centres: LaMarsh Centre for Child and Youth Research, Muscle Health Research Centre, Centre for Aging Research and Education, Centre for Vision Research, and the Dahdaleh Institute for Global Health Research. Building on the recent success of establishing a new School of Global Health in 2020, the Faculty is poised to take up exciting new opportunities, including new curricula in the School of Nursing, expansion of our Neuroscience footprint with cutting edge new facilities, and expanded partnerships and programming in a new Healthcare Precinct in the nearby City of Vaughan. The incoming Dean will be tasked with guiding the Faculty’s next strategic planning effort in response to these emerging opportunities in a world that has changed dramatically in the past 5 years, in ways that centre human and planetary health among the greatest challenges of the 21st Century.

The Dean of Health is the senior officer of the Faculty and a member of the University’s senior leadership team. Reporting to the Vice-President Academic & Provost, the Dean is responsible for all aspects of the Faculty’s operations, including budget and funds development, and to maintain and enhance strong and productive partnerships with external constituencies—including governments at all levels, health agencies, industry, other post-secondary institutions, and community groups—and will work collaboratively with this outstanding Faculty to achieve even greater levels of excellence. The successful candidate must possess academic qualifications and scholarly accomplishments suitable for a tenured appointment in the Faculty, have a proven track record of successful leadership, promotion of teaching and research excellence in a university setting, and a demonstrated commitment to equity, diversity and inclusion (EDI), anti-racism, and decolonization. They must be a highly collaborative colleague inspired by the prospect of working with the broader York University community during an exciting phase of growth. The appointment is based on a five-year term, which is renewable, with an expected start date of July 1, 2022 or as agreed upon with the successful candidate.
