Assistant Professor of Economics

Southwestern University

The Department of Economics and Business at Southwestern University invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor of Economics position beginning August 2022. Our highest priority is for candidates who can teach Principles of Economics, an introductory course that covers microeconomics and macroeconomics, a quantitative methods course for business majors, and upper level electives that appeal to both economics and business majors. We will consider applicants from many subfields in economics, however candidates that complement existing offerings will be prioritized. Our programs aim to develop skills in data analysis and, therefore, applicants should have an empirical research agenda using applied econometric methods. Interest in supervising students on empirical projects as part of independent studies, capstone projects or honors work will be viewed favorably in evaluating the applications. Candidates are also encouraged to demonstrate their experience or interest in connecting their research and teaching to other disciplines or to our interdisciplinary programs (Data Science, International Studies, Environmental Studies, Feminist Studies, and Race and Ethnicity Studies.)

Successful applicants will demonstrate a commitment to excellence in undergraduate teaching and a willingness to foster undergraduate research. An active research program is critical. The typical teaching load is five courses per year. Campus-wide responsibilities include advising students and university service.

The Economics and Business Department and Southwestern University are committed to recruiting candidates who both excel in teaching and research/creative work and can best serve our diverse student population. As of the fall 2020 semester, 40% of students enrolled at Southwestern are members of groups traditionally underrepresented in higher education and we are committed to further increasing and supporting the diversity of our students, faculty and curriculum. The Department seeks candidates who have a demonstrated commitment to, and will take an active role in, enhancing diversity, inclusion, and equity across the University, including fostering a sense of community and belonging for students.

Southwestern University (Georgetown, Texas) is a selective undergraduate residential liberal arts institution located in the greater Austin area.  Established in 1840, Southwestern enrolls approximately 1,500 students and maintains a student–faculty ratio of 12 to 1. The university provides a highly interdisciplinary and holistic education that values high-impact learning experiences, such as study abroad, internships, and faculty-student research. A member of the recently formed Liberal Arts Colleges Racial Equity Leadership Alliance, Southwestern is committed to fostering a diverse educational environment and encourages applications from members of groups traditionally underrepresented in academia. Additional information about the university can be found at our website: www.southwestern.edu.

To apply:  Applicants should submit through Interfolio a cover letter, a curriculum vitae, brief statements of teaching philosophy including a list of courses you are interested in teaching, teaching evaluations if available, a research statement including how undergraduates can be involved in your research, and three letters of reference.  At least one of the reference letters should address teaching aptitude.  Email and paper applications will not be accepted.  Apply at apply.interfolio.com/95559. We review applications on a rolling basis, with priority given to those applications received before November 15. We will interview candidates starting on January 3 to coincide with the ASSA Annual Meeting.

All offers of employment are contingent on successful completion of the University’s Background Check Policy process.  Southwestern University is an Equal Opportunity Employer.  EOE/M/F
