Position Summary:

The Assistant Professor of Professional Writing will develop and teach courses in the subject for undergraduate and graduate students, in addition to teaching first year composition.   • Teach in one or more of the following areas: digital rhetoric, workplace writing, publishing, intercultural communication, information design;
  •   Expertise in areas such as public writing, grant writing, digital publishing, and professional editing;
  • Our ideal candidate will be an outstanding scholar and teacher with a background in professional writing and teaching experience in core undergraduate classes; a passion for undergraduate teaching; experience in teaching students of diverse backgrounds; and the ability to work well with faculty across the university.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Be willing to adopt innovative teaching methods and delivery as appropriate.
  • Develop and implement evaluation and assessment techniques that are appropriate for each course.
  • Use multiple measures to assess student learning on a regular basis and provide frequent feedback to students relative to their performance.
  • Possess the knowledge, talents and skills in the discipline to promote effective teaching.
  • Demonstrate respect for the diverse learning needs of students.
  • Demonstrate the ability to develop and implement curriculum objectives and content for courses offered and taught in one’s curriculum area.
  • Demand and maintain high standards and expectations for all students.
  • Implement teaching activities and a diversity of teaching techniques, procedures, and resources including application of technology.
  • Possess the knowledge, talents and skills in the discipline to promote effective teaching.
  • Demonstrate ability to incorporate diverse perspectives into teaching and scholarship.
  • Serve effectively on committees and other appropriate functions that assist in University governance.
  • Be available and knowledgeable and demonstrate proficiency in the practice of academic advisement of students.

Required Minimum Qualifications:

  • Ph.D. with emphasis in Professional or Technical Writing, Rhetoric and Composition, or a related field. Degree must be awarded from accredited institution by July 2022. ABD applicants will be considered if degree requirements are completed before the date of hire (August 1, 2022).  
  • A minimum of two years of teaching experience. 
  • Documented evidence of excellence in teaching.
  • Documented record of research/publication in the field of professional writing.
  •  Experience teaching students how to use current software such as Microsoft Office, Adobe Technical Communication Suite, Illustrator, InDesign, and Photoshop, preferably across platforms.
  • Candidates with a demonstrated ability to incorporate diverse perspectives into teaching and scholarship preferred.
  • Candidates should demonstrate responsiveness toward and understanding of diverse student backgrounds, especially with regard to socioeconomic status, race, ethnicity, culture, ability/disability, sexual orientation, and gender identity. Evidence of good character, mature attitude, and professional integrity.
