Having challenged convention since its foundation in 1961, the University of Sussex was created to be life-changing for its students, to deliver progressive research that fosters field-leading expertise, improves our teaching, and impacts the world beyond the university. Building on our strong foundations, we have been reimagining the pioneering spirit of the original purpose of our university to ensure it is fit for new times and a new generation.

Equality, diversity and inclusion are everyone’s business, and fundamental to the success of the University of Sussex. We aspire not just to reduce inequalities in outcomes for individuals, but to use our expertise, commitment, and courage to challenge the status quo and address under-representation and disadvantage. Sussex’s values are intrinsic to everything it does.

Sussex is proudly international in our outlook and intake, ranked 1st in the world for Development Studies in the QS World University Rankings 2021.  From the first Mandela scholarships in the 1970s, to our pioneering role in the establishment of Erasmus, Sussex has been internationally minded from its inception.  We host 4,500 students from over 130 countries annually and welcome one of the largest UK communities of prestigious Chevening Scholars to our campus.

The Vice-Chancellor holds overall responsibility for academic and administrative leadership within the University, and for representing and promoting the University externally.  Building on our long tradition of experimentation and innovation, the Vice-Chancellor will work with us to realize the University’s ambition to be a ‘better university for a better world’.  Through visible, dedicated leadership the Vice-Chancellor will engage with all stakeholders to deliver the University’s strategic vision, creating and sustaining a cohesive and inclusive community with equality, diversity and inclusion at its core.

You will be a distinguished leader with deep knowledge of the sector both in the UK and internationally. You will be able to evidence successful leadership in a comparable organisation and the ability to work in an increasingly complex and uncertain environment.  You will be able to communicate a compelling and distinctive view of the future of Sussex and the sector, building commitment and turning vision into action and developing and sustaining diverse and high performing teams.
