Johns Hopkins University is seeking a versatile, talented, and enterprisingSenior Writer to join our award-winning team within the Office of Communications. You’ll speak with distinguished faculty members about their latest discoveries, uncover compelling stories about our amazing alumni and students, and talk with renowned experts about the most important issues of our time—COVID-19, artificial intelligence, alternative energy, climate change, disinformation and the forces that threaten democracy around the world, and so much more.

The ideal candidate will be ambitious, proactive, and a skilled writer, with the demonstrated ability to write longform features and timely news stories, craft thoughtful Q+As, and distill complex subject matter in a way that resonates with a large, diverse and curious readership, both internal and external. This person will also conceptualize and/or contribute to the creation of content—including photo galleries, videos, and interactive graphics—that augments digital storytelling.

NOTE:Please include three writing samples with resume and cover letter.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Identify, research, and write articles forJohns Hopkins Magazine, the Hub and other print and digital publications produced by the Office of Communications.
  • Cover varied beats by keeping abreast of research in those areas and communicating regularly with faculty, staff, students, and alumni.
  • Collaborate with editors and designers in brainstorming and planning content and offering visual solutions for articles.
  • Contribute editorial content to project-based cross-functional teams as needed.

Minimum Qualifications (Mandatory):

  • Bachelor’s Degree required.
  • Minimum of three years of related experience required; magazine, print or online publications.
  • Multimedia editorial experience preferred.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • A love of and passion for storytelling. Demonstrated abilities as a feature writer, conveying complex subject matter to a general audience.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and take initiative in creating new editorial content, while also maintaining a collaborative relationship with editors and other staff.
  • Work habits of being organized, detail-oriented, and adept at juggling multiple assignments to meet deadlines.
  • Desire to be an active part of a small team.
  • Welcome and benefit from feedback from editors, peers, and managers.
  • Ability to work in a hybrid in-person/remote environment, as needed.

Starting Salary Range: $50,700 - $69,780 annually (commensurate with experience)

This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
