The Student Support Services Specialist will support the Office of Student Affairs and primarily focus on current and new initiatives in support of program development, management, and coordination of these initiatives. In this role, the individual must exercise independent judgment and maintain confidential and sensitive materials. The successful candidate will work with all students and various parties in the Office of Student Affairs, reporting to the Chief Student Affairs Officer.
Job Duties/Tasks:
- Serve as an educator and advocate for the unique needs of medical students personal, emotional, and/or social issues
- Provide brief solution focused counseling
- Utilize a broad knowledge base and expertise by incorporating mental health education principles, practices, and models used in similar settings to promote student success
- Develop, implement, manage, and assess education training programs to support the challenges associated with medical school (i.e. Balancing the Demands of Medicine; Risk of Addiction in Medical School; Physician Self-Care and Resilience: Test Anxiety; USMLE Preparation and the Stress Associated with Licensure exams) with the goal of continuous quality improvement
- Advise students on successfully navigating the appropriate CMSRU resources, including the Student Wellness Program, psychiatry services, and student health services
- Provide one on one and group counseling sessions for relevant issues pertaining to medical student life
- Provide counseling and guidance to students who may fall outside of the standard medical curriculum (i.e. Leave of Absence, Independent Study, Student Scholar Research)
- Assist with the facilitation of the Proactive Advising for Student Support (PASS) program which provides emotional and academic support options for M1-M3 students experiencing academic issues
- Foster an environment of well-being for CMSRU students through education and awareness of individual responsibility
- Collaborate with Rowan University, Wellness Center as necessary
- Performs other duties as assigned
Minimum Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s Degree
- A minimum of 2 (two) years professional, full-time experience (preferably at college/university in student affairs or at a health system).
- Strong oral communication skills required to effectively communicate with a diverse group of individuals
- Strong written communications skills required to maintain quality documentation
- Experience developing, implementing, managing, and assessing educational training sessions for students, patients, or employees
- Experience advising college students, individually and in groups
Qualifications (preferred)
- Master’s Degree in Social Work (MSW) and Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) or Master's Degree in Counseling and Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC)
- Three (3) years of full-time experience at college/university in student affairs or at a health system
- Previous counseling experience in a medical school or healthcare environment
- Experience with medical student issues
- Familiarity with student disability/accommodations
Knowledge and Abilities:
- Ability to be an independent, responsible self-starter
- Ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously
- Ability to speak and write effectively
- Ability to interact and work effectively with students, faculty, staff and external constituencies from various ethnic and cultural backgrounds.
- Ability to handle multiple demands while maintaining flexibility and adaptability
- Ability to maintain cooperative working relationships with the department and with outside departments and agencies
- Advanced organizational skills
- Proficiency in Word, Power Point and data entry
- Ability to analyze problems and data, and take or recommend action
- Ability to prepare statistical and other reports
