UC San Diego Human Resources is searching for a strategic and innovative leader to serve as the Senior Director, People Services and Rewards. Reporting to the Chief Human Resources Officer (CHRO) and serving on the HR leadership team as an influential leader building synergies across the HR portfolio, the Senior Director, People Services and Rewards delivers forward-thinking programs designed to attract, retain, reward, recognize and support UC San Diego’s exceptional talent. This leader will join our organization at a critical time as we build from a position of considerable strength to become an even more strategic and agile partner to our campus stakeholders.

 

The Sr. Director, People Services and Rewards manages Compensation and Classification programs and provides strategic oversight to a portfolio of services supporting UC San Diego employees and retirees, including Benefits, Equal Opportunity Programs, Events and Recognition, Wellbeing Services, Disability Counseling, Leaves of Absence, the Faculty and Staff Assistance Program, and the Retirement Resource Center.The Sr. Director provides long-term strategic leadership on compensation issues, develops the campus compensation philosophy, and administers the related policies and procedures to achieve organizational goals. In addition, this position leads other managers overseeing employee services.

 

This position is responsible for effective delivery of services and compliance with regulations, collective bargaining agreements, system-wide policies, and alignment with campus goals. In addition, this position serves as an advisor to the CHRO and acts as a liaison with the University of California Office of the President in system-wide discussions and decisions regarding employee services and rewards initiatives.The ideal candidate will have an in-depth understanding of large-scale Compensation and classification structures, broad, integrated knowledge of HR programs and employee services, and a track record of serving as a strategic advisor to conceptualize strategies, lead action plans, remove barriers, and enable organizational goals.This position is designated as confidential under HEERA.

 

QUALIFICATIONS

• Thorough knowledge of compensation programs and initiatives including base pay and internal equity, progressive compensation principles and theory, salary survey methodologies, and emerging trends in pay administration.

• Proven track record of managing a diverse and high-performing team, and demonstrated commitment to equity, diversity and inclusion.

• Thorough knowledge of the ways in which federal/state legislation and labor contracts impact compensation policies.

• Excellent management and interpersonal skills, including tact, discretion, and high ethical standards in dealing with confidential information. Ability to work in a collaborative manner at all levels of the organization, and to navigate through conflict effectively.

• Skills to manage and develop staff members. Experience in a leadership role with responsibility for coaching, developing direct and indirect reports, motivating and inspiring a team to deliver exceptional results, and developing knowledge and skills that position staff to confidently and autonomously pursue challenges and opportunities.

• Ability to exercise a high degree of judgment in recommending and developing diverse compensation programs and to understand the interrelationship of such programs in other areas of human resources and the organization.

• Demonstrated highly effective communication, decision-making, analytical, problem solving, critical thinking, project/initiative management, interpersonal and organizational leadership skills.

• Strong project management skills. Ability to effectively plan projects with campus-wide impact, manage support staff, and successfully close projects within established timelines. Ability to manage multiple projects concurrently.

• Advanced knowledge of organizational policies, procedures, initiatives and fiscal/budget processes in addition to a thorough knowledge of human resources practices and procedures.

• Demonstrated track record in moving ideas and models through implementation.

• Thorough understanding of how compensation practices fit into and support the overall employee experience.

• Knowledge of organization benefit programs, current business and benefit trends.

• Knowledge of applicable human resources policies and procedures, labor contracts and employment law, including equal opportunity and staff affirmative action laws and the Americans with Disabilities Act. Knowledge of federal, state and UC EEO/AA policies, law and related compliance requirements regarding nondiscrimination in all areas covered by law and policy and sexual harassment.

• Knowledge of the latest development and trends in employee assistance programming and the laws applied specifically and generally to Employee Assistance Program systems and services.
