Job Summary:

With over 700 events annually, the Assistant Audio Supervisor helps manage the on-site, backstage operations of the theatre performance and production support facilities of the Office of the Arts, including but not limited to, the Cutler Majestic Theatre, Paramount Theatre, Semel and Greene Theaters, Black Box Theatre, Bright Family Screening Room, Paramount Studios and Scene Shop. They lead audio and digital production projects, maintain, inventory, and operate audio, communications, and related equipment in Office of the Arts venues. They serve as the Technical Supervisor on Duty (TSoD), supervising the day to day use and technical systems of the Office of the Arts managed facilities. The Assistant Audio Supervisor routinely and directly supervises large projects to be completed by up 15 intermittent and student technicians as per project needs. They work with Office of the Arts Production staff to provide superior production values in Office of the Arts venues while maintaining safe working practices in the venue. They plan and execute projects independently with limited supervision, solve varied problems and adjust methods on the fly.

Purpose of Position: The Assistant Audio Supervisor supports the Audio Supervisor and Associate Audio Supervisor in the day-to-day operations of the Audio Department of the Office of the Arts. With over 700 unique shows and events per year, the Assistant Audio Supervisor will help ensure superior production values, safety, and smooth technical operations in all OA venues.

Your Key Responsibilities:
  • Assist the Audio Supervisor and Associate Audio Supervisor in logistical planning of selected theater events and productions and provide technical expertise and supervision to said events and productions.
  • Independently supervise intermittent technicians and student employees in Office of the Arts venues. Supervision includes highly specialized theatrical tasks while applying and enforcing safe working practices.
  • Serve as Technical Supervisor on Duty (TSoD) for shows, events, work calls and rehearsals as assigned. The TSOD will be responsible for backstage safety, implement the Emergency Evacuation Plan when necessary, communicate with Front of House personnel, communicate with outside users and crews, maintain and protect house equipment, enforce house rules, and supervise part-time Emerson employee stage crew members and stage door supervisors.
  • Ensure that best practices for health and safety are being adhered to by all users of the theaters and oversee the implementation of emergency procedures when necessary.
  • Provide Audio support on ArtsEmerson load-ins, outs, special events, and work calls. Support other productions and events as assigned. Provide “hands on” assistance to those clients that require more help with the technical set up of their production.
  • Work with clients and or rental shops to integrate rented equipment with Office of the Arts infrastructure.
  • Supports Emerson Stage by offering technical advice and facilities expertise during productions.
  • Oversee the facilitation and operation of Office of the Arts digital events.
  • Assist the Office of the Arts Audio Supervisor with maintenance, improvement, and repair projects in all OA facilities.
  • Manage and maintain all audio inventories, including software, and all audio documentation in Box.


Your Other Responsibilities:
  • Serve as the lead Audio Engineer, operating audio consoles in a FOH (Front of House) or Monitor capacity, programming audio playback systems, and frequency coordination for wireless equipment as needed.
  • Train student employees, overhire employees, and OA Production staff in safe and proper use of audio and other backstage equipment.
  • Create and distribute overhire and student employment requests and schedule confirmations.
  • Purchase and track supplies for shows, events, and maintenance.
  • Act as interim Associate Audio Supervisor when the Associate Audio Supervisor is out/as needed.
  • Other duties as assigned


Your Qualifications:

  • Associates degree or 2 years' experience in audio engineering, theatrical supervision and crew management.
  • Demonstrable knowledge of theatrical audio operations and equipment.
  • Experience with large format, digital audio consoles.
  • Strong knowledge of signal flow as it pertains to a live audio environment.
  • Understanding of and basic proficiency with playback and show control software including Qlab and Pro Tools.
  • Ability to solder and perform basic electrical repairs.
  • Demonstrable knowledge of Microsoft Office or Google Suite.
  • Ability to work with varied personalities in a high stress environment.


You'll be preferred if you have:

  • Knowledge of patch bay systems and their operation.
  • Experience with video editing and live-streaming software including vMix, and the Adobe Creative Suite.
  • Familiarity with proper rigging procedures for speakers and other audio components.
  • Familiarity with wireless microphone systems and their operation.
  • Understanding of and basic proficiency with computer aided drafting.
  • Additional knowledge of theatrical industry and OSHA safety procedure and practices.
  • Additional knowledge and experience with theatrical rigging and counterweight systems.
  • Bachelor's Degree in Audio Production or related field preferred.


Work Environment:
  • Exposure to noise, dust, heat, chemicals, fumes, etc.
  • Intellectual and mental concentration and the need to concentrate, intellectually, for extended periods of time
  • Requires the constant coordination of mental and visual attention
  • Required to move/lift objects that are Heavy, 50lbs+
  • Required to move/life objects frequently
  • No Travel


Please note: the salary for this position will actually be between $35,000-$36,000 based upon experience.

Grade of Position: A12N40

Scheduled Weekly Hours: 40.00

Hiring Range: $32,950.00 - $34,450.00
