Job Summary:

This position will join our team that has been tracking SARS-CoV-2 in wastewater throughout the State of Wisconsin using wastewater-based epidemiology (WBE). Tracking pathogens in wastewater is a relatively new approach that shows great promise in monitoring populations for infectious diseases. The person in this position will serve as an epidemiologist to the program by analyzing data collected from the Wisconsin Wastewater Monitoring Network and using statistical approaches to review and interpret wastewater and related human case data from associated geographic areas. This position will be responsible for coordinating electronic data transmission from data source, uploading to the Wisconsin dashboard and to the Center for Disease Control (CDC)/National Wastewater Surveillance System (NWSS). Data will be used to inform epidemiologic and programmatic decisions related to disease spread and infections. This position will work with local public health agencies to provide technical assistance and training on the interpretation of wastewater data associated with the state monitoring network. In addition, they will collaborate with researchers throughout the University of Wisconsin system as well as with Wisconsin Department of Health Services (DHS) and CDC to help continue the development of a robust wastewater surveillance program, publish manuscripts and promote efficiencies in data workflows. The position will also be responsible for tracking grant deliverables and providing routine progress reports to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Education:

Required
PhD or other terminal degree, or a degree at least one level above the level of instruction, or otherwise approved as qualified by the Dean
PhD in epidemiology, biostatistics or closely related field is required.

Qualifications:

A minimum of 2 years of experience working in the field of epidemiology, environmental health and/or public health in a professional or academic setting is required. Experiences and attributes must include:

- Experience applying epidemiology study design and analysis methods
- Ability to create, clean and manipulate large datasets
- Expertise in statistical analysis of data using SAS, R or equivalent statistical software
- Experience in preparation and publication of scientific reports, peer reviewed manuscripts and public facing dashboards
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Ability to work both independently and with a team

Candidates with knowledge of microbiology and infectious diseases will be preferred.

Additional Information:

This position is located within DHS, Division of Public Health (DPH) and is maintained through a contract and ongoing partnership with the Wisconsin State Laboratory of Hygiene (WSLH). WSLH serves as the public, environmental, and occupational health laboratory for the State of Wisconsin and is part of the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health. This position will work within the CDC NWSS-funded program, within the Bureau of Environmental and Occupational Health (BEOH) in the Environmental Epidemiology and Surveillance (EES) Section.
