Assistant Professor (tenure-track) or Associate Professor (tenured) in Philosophy. Department of Philosophy, University at Buffalo, State University of New York, Buffalo, NY.

Area of Specialization: Any area directly connected to Applied Ontology, including, but not limited to, Metaphysics or Applied Ontology or Formal Logic. Areas of Competence: Any areas connected to Area of Specialization.

The Department of Philosophy at the University at Buffalo (UB), State University of New York, is seeking a faculty colleague at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor (tenure-track) in the field of Applied Ontology.

The successful candidate will be expected to contribute to UB’s Applied Ontology focus within the PhD Program in Philosophy. Teaching will include philosophy courses at the undergraduate, Masters, and PhD levels. The course load will be two courses per semester (2/2), plus usual advising roles. Normal departmental, university, and discipline-related service duties will be expected of successful candidates.

Applicants for Assistant Professor need not presently be working in Applied Ontology, but demonstrated success in the field will be required for tenure. Demonstrated success is understood to include such achievements as publishing in prominent ontology journals, having papers accepted by leading ontology conferences, using or developing ontologies, and winning grant funding for ontology research. Applicants must have a PhD conferred by time of appointment. Exceptional applicants who are all-but-dissertation (ABD) will be considered. (The initial contract for an ABD will be for Visiting Assistant Professor until the PhD is conferred.) We will prefer candidates with teaching experience in higher education and experience in developing or using ontologies. 

Applicants for Associate Professor must already have demonstrated success in working in Applied Ontology. Demonstrated success is understood to include such achievements as publishing in prominent ontology journals, having papers accepted by leading ontology conferences, using or developing ontologies, and winning grant funding for ontology research. Applicants for Associate Professor must have a PhD, teaching experience in a higher education setting, experience in developing ontologies, and a scholarly profile appropriate for the rank.
