The Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences at Syracuse University seeks applicants for a Postdoctoral Researcher position in snowmelt detection using satellite remote sensing. This is a fully funded, full-time, 2-year position (1 year, renewable for an additional year). The successful applicant will work closely with team members from Syracuse University, NASA, and the Army Corps of Engineers on a NASA -funded research project that seeks improve monitoring of snowmelt dynamics via data fusion of active and passive microwave satellite observations. The position responsibilities include development and testing of the data fusion method and evaluating it in multiple environments using indicators of snowmelt, as well as preparing manuscripts for publication and presenting research at scientific conferences. Opportunities will be available to participate in snow-related field activities in the northeast U.S. The Postdoctoral Researcher will also help to mentor a graduate student who will be working on the project, and may have the opportunity to gain teaching experience.

Qualifications
The project is well suited to applicants with a strong background in remote sensing, snow science, hydrology, GIS, and/or climate science. Prior remote sensing research experience is required, along with strong skills in statistical data analysis and scientific programming (Python, R, Matlab, or similar). Knowledge of the cryosphere is expected. Experience with active microwave remote sensing, GIS, and/or data science and machine learning, would be considered an asset. Applicants should also have a demonstrated record of research and publication, and hold a PhD in earth and environmental science, cryosphere science, hydrology, atmospheric science, or a related field before starting this position. Responsibilities include: Developing statistical methods to fuse active and passive sources of satellite remote sensing observations in order to detect snowmelt events (30%); evaluating the derived snowmelt products at a handful of locations with intensive ground observations of snow properties (20%); preparing scientific manuscripts for publication in peer-reviewed literature (30%); participation in and support for planned field observations of snow properties in the northeast U.S. (10%); participating in scientific conferences, communicating research to peers, attending workshops (10%); and assisting in mentoring of graduate students, where appropriate (10%).
