The UW Bothell School of Educational Studies, has an exciting part-time opportunity for a Research Scientist/Engineer!

The purpose of this project is to design and study science content education for aspiring and practicing elementary school teachers. Beginning in the first 2 years, the project will design and study a 2-quarter sequence to be taught at UWB that will be a science and engineering course that centers racial equity and teaches aspiring elementary teachers the science topics they would be responsible for teaching. The project will follow those students into their teacher certification program to study the impact of the courses on their science identities and science teaching. The project will also extend to support an online version of the course as well as workshops for practicing teachers.


• Lead and execute education research, including the development of the research plan, data collection, data processing, and data analysis
• Communicate with external partners for data collection and collaboration
• Write publications in peer-reviewed journals
• Develop conference proposals and presentation of findings at academic conferences
• Lead iterative processes of design, research, and re-design


• PhD Degree in Science Education, Learning Sciences or related field.
• Must have at least three years’ experience working with preservice and inservice teachers, practicing scientists, and curriculum design.

Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.


• Must also have some professional experience work in a science- or engineering-related field.
• Must have experience working successfully with diverse communities.
• Must have experience leading and conducting research in learning settings.
• Must demonstrate a commitment to issues of equity, STEM-linked identity formation, and culture in the design of STEM learning environments.
• Excellent writing and presentation skills, experience in qualitative/quantitative data collection/analysis activities.
• Knowledge of theories on learning, especially as they pertain to identity, equity, and place-based.
• Experience writing for peer-reviewed publications, experience working with large sets of data, including data management, data processing and cloud sharing, and software for data analysis.
• Experience with running and managing project meetings with project staff and community partners, leading the design of research studies.
• Experience conducting professional development with practicing teachers and/or teaching elementary science methods courses.


• Ability to manage internal and external partnerships while conducting simultaneous projects and project activities. Familiarity with Dedoose and other qualitative data analysis tools.
