Summary/Objective

The Production Assistant provides support to the Programming department by writing, developing and producing on-air promotional materials and special editorial content for WAMU and its locally-produced programs. The Production Assistant will work with the On-Air Operations Manager, Program Director, Membership Campaign Director, program producers and/or newsroom staff to develop promotional content for on-air and digital publication in support of station programming, fundraising and branding/image priorities. The Production Assistant will also be called upon to support the producers of local programs on a variety of tasks, including, but not limited to: audio recording, editing, and mixing; publishing program content on WAMU.org and social media properties; writing and editing copy for broadcast and online publication; and collaborating with internal stakeholders on the development and production of promotional campaigns and special programming. This position requires excellent and polished broadcast script writing skills. This individual must demonstrate creativity in conceiving on-air promotional campaigns for a variety of departments that reflect WAMU’s established sound and tone. Strong production skills are essential, including proficiency in audio editing software. This Production Assistant reports to the On-Air Operations Manager within the Programming department.

Essential Functions

1. Audio Production:Audio production of materials for broadcast, as required, to support the station’s programming, marketing, membership/fundraising, branding/image, or other on-air efforts. Includes developing promotional concepts, writing and editing scripts, pulling audio clips, recording voice talent, editing and mixing, and collaborating with internal stakeholders on production.

2. Program Production Support:Supports producers of local programs – including, but not limited to: The Politics Hour with Kojo Nnamdi, Hot Jazz Saturday Night, The Big Broadcast, WAMU podcasts, and WAMU newsroom specials on key production and marketing tasks. Responsibilites may include: writing and editing copy for broadcast and online publication, publishing program content and WAMU.org and social media properties, audio editing and mixing, and developing on-air and online promos.

3. Operational Improvements & Training:Assists with training of other staff in proper production techniques, use of editing equipment and software, brainstorming with other departments on special projects, or other duties as assigned.

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work
  • Part time
  • 27.5 hours/week maximum
  • This position is covered by SAG-AFTRA.


Required Education and Experience
  • Associate's degree or equivalent.
  • 1-3 years of relevant experience.


Preferred Education and Experience
  • Experience preferred in public radio production

  • Demonstrated ability to create effective on-air copy and meet deadlines
  • Demonstrated proficiency in techniques for creating compelling audio production to meet the needs of a dynamic, growing radio station.
