The University of Central Missouri’s Division of Music seeks highly qualified candidates to serve as Assistant Director of Bands/Director of Athletic Bands. This is a full-time 10.5-month, tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor. The position begins July 1, 2022. Salary and rank contingent upon qualifications and experience.

The primary responsibility of the selected candidate will be to lead all facets of the athletic band program including directing the marching band, basketball pep band, organizing the annual Festival of Champions marching competition, and Homecoming/Parade Band events. Applicants must also demonstrate experience and/or strong abilities in a secondary area of need. The Division of Music is interested in considering a wide range of secondary areas that candidates may offer, such as applied studio teaching; performing and teaching in jazz, commercial, and musical practices from around the world; conducting a large concert ensemble (Symphonic Band, approximately 50% music majors); experience with music technology; teaching courses in the undergraduate music education sequence; and areas not listed here.

This position will work in tandem with the Director of Bands in all aspects of a comprehensive collegiate band program to promote the Division of Music and School of Visual and Performing Arts with specific considerations toward recruiting and service to the institution. As with all faculty positions, high-quality teaching, professional growth, and contributions to the profession are expected and well­ supported.

The University of Central Missouri’s Division of Music enjoys ample teaching and rehearsal space and includes a 385-seat recital hall and a 1300-seat concert hall on the Warrensburg campus. Recently-approved renovations to our facilities include a major upgrade to the music technology studios allowing for state-of-the-art recording capabilities and collaborative projects across the School of Visual and Performing Arts and the university at large. Access to our Missouri Innovation Campus (Lee’s Summit, MO) allows for unique outreach and professional opportunities, and the cultural hub of downtown Kansas City is less than one hour away. The marching band enjoys complete access to a full synthetic turf practice field with a high vantage point tower and adequate indoor facilities during periods of inclement weather. Candidates will need to demonstrate success in teaching, drill design, and program administration at the collegiate level and/or secondary level(s).

Additionally, to fulfill a full teaching load of 12 hours each semester, candidates will need to demonstrate proficiency in a secondary area appropriate to that specialization.
