Primary Duties and Responsibilities:

Job Title: University Librarian

Department: University Library

Reports to: Provost and Chief Academic Officer

Status: Full-Time, Benefit Eligible

Location: Lisle Campus

Position Summary: The University Librarian is responsible for overall administration of the library
program and the Mesa campus, including planning, budgeting, collection development, staff supervision
and evaluation, and public relations.

Essential Job Responsibilities:

1. Prepares and administers the annual library budget, including salaries, operating budget, materials
budget, equipment, facilities, and fundraising in order to maintain and provide the appropriate range of
services and technologies to support curricular and research needs.

2. Works with the library personnel, the Library Committee, and the wider University population to
ensure that library collections, resources, services and planning are aligned with the University’s
mission and goals. Coordinates operations and facilitates communications with the Mesa campus to
ensure consistency of service and support for academic and curricular programs.

3. Formulates policies, rules, regulations, and practices for the most effective use of the library’s
personnel, resources, and facilities; promotes and supports professional development and training
activities for the professional librarians and staff members; supervises the work of the library
personnel and oversees hiring, training, evaluation, and retention of librarians and support staff

4. Represents the library’s services and resources to the campus community and beyond; provides
strategic direction for special collections and the University archives; works with the Office of
University Development in fund raising and grant-seeking activities. Serves as a member of the
Provost’s Council and coordinates with the deans, faculty, and academic leaders to ensure a
comprehensive library program is provided.

5. Represents the Library and the University to the extended community through on and off campus
programs; serves the profession through service at the local, state, national, and international levels;
participates in professional activities, research, publication, and presentations; works with internal and
external organizations to advocate for library support and services, and to raise funds in support of
those services.

Other Functions:

Serve as a member of the Provost’s Council.

Other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications:



Education: Master's Degree Required, Doctorate Degree Preferred. MLS or equivalent; subject
master’s degree or PhD

Experience: Seven or more years in librarianship with increasing responsibility; teaching and/or
supervisory experience; record of professional activity

Physical Requirements: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to stand; walk; use hands to touch, handle or feel; and reach with hands and arms. This position requires the ability to occasionally lift office products and supplies, up to 20 pounds. Use of computer screen, phone and customer service. May require bending, or sitting for long periods of time. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.

Per Gov. Pritzker’s Executive Order proof of vaccination or weekly COVID-19 testing is required.

Travel (If applicable): No

Supervisory Responsibility (if applicable): Yes. Supervises library professional and support staff;
oversees planning and implementation of library services.
