The University of Georgia College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences seeks candidates for the position of Professor and Head of the Department of Crop and Soil Sciences .
  • This is a 12-month, tenured position.
  • Research, teaching, and extension faculty and students are located at the Athens, Tifton, and Griffin Campuses.
  • Program emphasis areas include plant breeding and genetics, molecular biology and genomics, plant physiology, crop sciences and biotechnology, weed science, soil physics, soil chemistry, soil fertility, soil health, hydrology, and environmental sciences.
  • There is a growing emphasis on sustainability and systems-based approaches to the interdisciplinary issues in these fields. Undergraduate majors are offered in Agriscience and Environmental Systems, Environmental Resource Science, Turfgrass Management, and Water and Soil Resources. Outstanding graduate programs leading to either the M.S. or Ph.D. degree are supported by a large graduate faculty with diverse research programs and broad disciplinary expertise. Innovative graduate-level programs include an area of emphasis in Sustainable Agriculture and a dual M.S. in Crop and Soil Sciences (Sustainable Agriculture) with the University of Padova, Italy. Programs of study can be developed in the research emphasis areas listed above.
  • Graduate studies and research programs are characterized by strong interdepartmental and interdisciplinary ties. The Department hosts a large statewide Extension program focused on applied research to address the needs of farmers and the public in Georgia and worldwide.
  • The department head (or their designee) has oversight over a large field unit supporting research, teaching, and outreach as well as statewide programs such as a variety testing program and an automated state-wide weather network.
  • This position is highly engaged with the various commodity commissions, groups, and other stakeholders of departmental programs.

  • This role would manage a robust fiscal budget to help promote the goals of the department

Additional Requirements Relevant/Preferred Education, Experience, Licensure, and/or Certification
At least two years of higher education administrative experience is desirable.

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and/or Competencies
Demonstrated excellence in teaching, research and/or extension are required. Other essential qualifications include evidence of creative and innovative leadership, demonstrated success in procuring extramural funding, and the proven ability to work effectively with faculty, staff, and students. Duties/Responsibilities
Specific responsibilities include faculty recruitment, management and leadership, student recruitment, faculty performance evaluations, coordinating promotion and tenure procedures, program planning and implementation, budget management, and management of physical facilities including both laboratory and field facilities. This position must also work effectively with and represent faculty to university and agency administrators, state and federal personnel, and industry stakeholders.
