Visiting Assistant Professor of History -  Lyon College invites applications for a Visiting Assistant Professor of History position starting in the fall of 2022. This one-year position may be renewed for a second year with the additional possibility of conversion to tenure-track. We seek to hire a historian of the United States and encourage all disciplines and areas of specialization within the field to apply. The successful candidate will have the ability to teach not only in their area of specialization, including both survey and upper level courses covering different periods and topics in U.S. History, but also in other courses important to the mission of the History program and the liberal arts core curriculum. The teaching load is seven courses per year. An earned doctorate in history at the start of appointment is required and previous teaching experience is preferred. Lyon College embraces the teacher-scholar model and expects the successful candidate to develop a productive research agenda. Experience at a small, residential liberal arts college as a student or faculty member and an understanding of the professional expectations for teaching, scholarship and service at such an institution are desirable.

Lyon College is located in Batesville, Arkansas, a safe and historic town of 10,000 that serves as commercial, medical, social, and governmental hub for an eight-county area and named by USA Today as the best city in which to live in Arkansas. The College currently enrolls almost 700 undergraduate students from 24 states and 16 foreign countries. Entering freshmen have an average high school GPA of 3.6 and an average ACT composite of 24 and SAT score of 1117.

Interested candidates should send a cover letter; CV; teaching portfolio, including representative course evaluations and a statement of teaching philosophy; a research interest statement; and the names and contact information of three references to Rebecca Varela, Department of Human Resources, 2300 Highland Road, Batesville, AR 72501 or electronically to jobs@lyon.edu with “VIS Professor History” in the subject line. Review of applications will begin January 15 and continue until the position is filled. To learn more about Lyon College go to www.lyon.edu
