Position Overview:

The School of Social Work in the College of Education and Human Development (CEHD) at the University of Minnesota – Twin Cities seeks to fill the Director of the School of Social Work position at the rank of Full Professor. The Director provides leadership as an active scholar and by supporting research and innovative learning in the School. In addition, the Director provides academic leadership to the School of Social Work in consultation with the CEHD Dean and Associate Deans, and has general administrative authority over the School, including the budget. The Director represents the School of Social Work in College-wide administrative planning and is a member of the CEHD Academic Leadership Team.

This is a 12-month, full-time administrative appointment with a target start date of August 2022.

The Director will have the following job responsibilities: 

  • Serve as the School’s chief administrative officer, with authority and responsibility for programs and resources, personnel, budget development and oversight, development and fundraising, and administrative planning
  • Promote excellence in interdisciplinary research, teaching, and community engagement that is consistent with the mission and goals of the School of Social Work and CEHD
  • Fulfill teaching and research duties as a faculty member, including staying current with new developments in the candidate’s field of scholarship and those represented in the School
  • Maintain involvement with professional organizations
  • Espouse and practice principles of affirmative action and equal opportunity, and promote diversity, equity and inclusion in the student body and workforce
  • Promote professional commitments to social justice, diversity, equity, inclusion, and antiracist practices in the School’s policies and procedures
  • Provide leadership in faculty and staff development: orient new faculty members, conduct annual reviews, manage the tenure and promotion process consistent with CEHD and University policies, nurture the professional development of faculty and staff toward excellence and national distinction in research, teaching, and community engagement
  • Establish, communicate, administer and interpret the School’s fiscal, programmatic, and personnel policies
Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • Doctoral-level degree in a field represented within the School
  • Candidate must be qualified for hire as a tenured Full Professor
  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion
  • Evidence of a well-established national or international reputation for productivity in one or more areas of academic scholarship within the School
  • Administrative experience in positions such as director or department chair/head, program coordinator, or director of graduate studies
  • Evidence of effectiveness in teaching, advising, and outreach/service with a demonstrated commitment to the profession of social work

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Successful administrative experience in a research university
  • Demonstrated skills in interpersonal communication, administrative leadership, supervision, and team building
  • Strong writing skills, including the preparation of planning and evaluation reports, project proposals for outside funding, and scholarly publications
  • Effective communication skills with constituents and stakeholders
  • Demonstrated success in procuring external funding for research and programmatic initiatives
  • Demonstrated success in mentoring and developing faculty and staff

About the School of Social Work:

Founded in 1917 on Dakota homeland, the School of Social Work at the University of Minnesota – Twin Cities is part of a public, research-intensive university and one of seven administrative units in the College of Education and Human Development (CEHD). The School offers several graduate and undergraduate educational programs including: a PhD in Social Work; a Master of Social Work; a Master of Education in Youth Development Leadership; a Bachelor of Science in Youth Studies, and undergraduate minors in Family Violence Prevention, Social Justice, and Youth Studies. Underlying all these multidisciplinary programs is a social justice value base and a commitment to the most vulnerable and marginalized populations in our society. Faculty are encouraged to collaborate with and participate in any or all of the School’s degree programs. School of Social Work scholars and educators actively engage the community, from local to global, and conduct research addressing a range of issues affecting diverse populations. A sample of current projects include: working to improve African immigrant patient experience with virtual health platforms, addressing relational well-being for siblings in foster care, a SAMHSA-funded initiative titled The Collaborative for Resilient Kids and Families in Minnesota, and Back to Indigenous Futures, a publicly engaged project to revitalize Indigenous traditional ecological knowledge. The curricula of our educational programs, and faculty research and engagement, intentionally seek to emphasize and expand anti-racist perspectives, social, economic and racial justice, and decolonization. The School is the home to a variety of labs and centers that actively involve our students, staff, faculty, and community partners, e.g., the Youth Work Learning Lab, the Center for Advanced Studies in Child Welfare, the Center for Practice Transformation, and the Minnesota Child Welfare Training Academy, an innovative partnership with the Minnesota Department of Human Services that is funded by the state legislature to further develop equitable child welfare practices.
