Position Information:

The Assistant Professor of Special Education, Moderate to Severe Disabilities position is in the School of Education, College of Communication and Education. 

Minimum Education and Experience:

  • The minimum education requirement for appointment to this position is a terminal degree in Special Education or related field (if related area, then at least a Masters in Special Education).
  • Candidates nearing completion of the terminal degree may be considered; however, all requirements for conferral of the degree must be met no later than August 17, 2022.
  • Background in special education K-12 pedagogy, with an emphasis in moderate-severe disabilities.
  • A minimum of three years K-12 classroom-based experience teaching students with IEPs
  • Holds a special education teaching license or credential (any state).
  • Demonstrated potential for special education grant writing, research, and scholarly activity commensurate with academic experience.
  • Academic knowledge and/or experience with teaching linguistically and culturally diverse populations.
  • Commitment to social and ecological justice as described in the mission, vision, and conceptual framework of the School of Education.
  • The successful candidate should also demonstrate experience promoting and fostering a learning environment that supports individuals from diverse backgrounds.

Additional Requirements and Responsibilities for this position:

  • Teach undergraduate prerequisites, credential, and graduate courses in special education teacher preparation programs.
  • Conduct original research and contribute to related research in the field of Special Education.
  • Contribute to the School of Education mission and vision in preparing educators and in ongoing program improvement.
  • Collaborate with public school and university constituencies.
  • Supervise student teachers and graduate field experiences in the rural/suburban service area of CSU, Chico.
  • Advise credential and graduate students and serve on graduate thesis/project committees.
  • Other assignments as necessary to meet programmatic and departmental needs.

  • Expertise in delivering instruction in teacher preparation courses, including distance education, online technologies, and learning management systems such as Blackboard.
  • Expertise in collaborating with communities and families, and designated instructional and related services.
  • Experience in teaching general and/or special education content areas with an emphasis in inclusive settings and modifying and adapting curriculum to meet the needs of all learners.
  • Experience with trauma informed practices and restorative justice to support behavioral and emotional needs.
  • Ability to collaborate in studies relevant to professional programs in the School of Education, such as teacher education, and with colleagues across campus and within the community.
  • Experience in higher education teaching and clinical supervision.
  • Experience with integrating instructional and assistive technologies into the K-12 classroom.
  • Experience working in rural communities.
