Professor of Practice – Acting

The Division of Theatre, Meadows School of the Arts, Southern Methodist University seeks an outstanding specialist in acting for a full-time, non-tenured Professor of Practice in its nationally regarded BFA and MFA programs. Located in the heart of Dallas, Texas, SMU is a long-time leader in the field of actor training. With a faculty of working professionals and a long-standing partnership with the Tony-award winning Dallas Theater Center, we work to make and teach theatre that celebrates the human spirit and deeply engages with the larger world.

Anticipated Start Date: August 2022

Candidates should evidence:

  • experience with a wide range of performance techniques with special emphasis on embodied pedagogies; on-camera experience also a plus.
  • a strong background in heightened language-both classical and contemporary
  • commitment to principles of Equity, Diversity, Inclusion, Belonging and Accessibility and experience with the application of these principles in a diverse classroom
  • demonstrable skill in effectively engaging students across the range of training levels from BFA to MFA
  • the ability to balance teaching responsibilities with a continued commitment to their own artistic practice
  • an MFA or commensurate professional experience in the field

The primary responsibilities for this appointment will be teaching acting in both undergraduate and graduate curricula with possible opportunities for departmental directing. Service may include academic advising, recruiting, student mentoring, departmental service as needed, and will be negotiated based on teaching load and departmental needs.
