The Department of Biology at Johns Hopkins University is seeking a full-timeResearch Technologist - Biology to work in the the laboratory of Dr. Nichole Broderick. The responsibilities include general lab maintenance and maintaining drosophila stocks, ordering supplies, and performing experiments in the areas of microbiology, molecular biology, and genomics. This is an end date position, renewable annually depending on funding and performance. Screening will begin immediately and continue until the position is filled. Applications from under-represented groups, including minorities, women, and people with disabilities are encouraged.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Raise and handle fly stocks, including preparation of fly food and raising Drosophila for experiments.
  • Ordering supplies, consumables, equipment, and managing deliveries.
  • Basic lab organization- maintain and wash glassware, autoclaving of general lab materials, preparation of microbiological media, and other routine laboratory duties.

Minimum Qualifications (Mandatory):

  • Bachelor's Degree in Biology, Chemistry or related field.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Genetics or Microbiology preferred
  • Some related post-undergraduate work experience preferred.
  • Some undergraduate laboratory experience.

Machines and/or Equipment Used:

  • Materials, machines and/or equipment used on the job include handling of microbes, autoclaves, thermocyclers, balances, pH meters, centrifuges, electrophoresis system, fly pushing stations equipped with CO2 tanks, dissecting microscopes, compound microscopes and epifluorescence microscopes.

The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
