Position Information

This is a full-time management (MPP) position. MPP employees serve at the pleasure of the campus President. MPPs do not serve a probationary period and never receive permanent status.

This position is a "designated position" in the California State University's Conflict of Interest Code. The successful candidate accepting this position is required to file Conflict of Interest forms subject to the regulations of the Fair Political Practices Commission.

Special Working Conditions:

The incumbent is required to maintain contact with the campus outside of normal working hours on a regular basis except during authorized vacation periods. Remote contact shall include telephone/cellphone, wireless data access devices, remotely logging into necessary systems, and/or electronic mail.

May be required to use a personal vehicle for off-campus events.

Conditions of Employment

Possession of a valid Driver's License is required. Employees in this position will be enrolled in the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) Government Employer Pull Notice Program which confirms possession of a valid driver's license and reflects driving record.

Satisfactory completion of a background check (including a criminal records check) is required for employment. CSU will make a conditional offer of employment, which may be rescinded if the background check reveals disqualifying information, and/or it is discovered that the candidate knowingly withheld or falsified information. Failure to satisfactorily complete the background check may affect the continued employment of a current CSU employee who was conditionally offered the position.

Major Duties

Under the general supervision of the AVP, IT Finance, and Auxiliaries the Esports Program Director is responsible for four domains in Esports strategy, which consist of Academics & Research, Community Engagement, Competition, and Entertainment. This incumbent coordinates these domains across campus in collaboration with respective campus leadership. The Esports Program Manager provides oversight of the CSUDH Esports program and is responsible for promoting a comprehensive and sustainable Esports program that advances the four domains. The program combines high-level competition against other elite universities; recruitment of academically eligible elite gamers; oversees the operations of a training facility and Incubation lab; engages with faculty to explore research opportunities related to video games; supports the CSUDH gaming community while addressing social justice issues related to games and esports; creates live events and digital content around the program; connects CSUDH students to jobs and opportunities in the video game and esports industries, and seeks external fundraising and scholarship opportunities.

Qualifications

Required Education and Experience:

A bachelor's degree in computer science, information systems, sports management, business, or related areas, plus three (3) years in a video game and/or esports industry, (1) of those years must be in a lead or supervisory capacity.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • 8 years equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Significant administrative and student activities programming experience in an institution that has a diverse student population and has a strong residential environment.
  • Extensive related experience in student affairs program development and management, fundraising, and judgment based on professional and/or academic expertise.
  • Demonstrated working knowledge of policies and procedures applicable to student internships and scholarships.
  • Professional judgment to interpret and implement University policies and procedures

Certifications: Valid Driver License

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Must be knowledgeable in the latest gaming technology.
  • Must be able to operate gaming technology, general computing devices, and audiovisual hardware.
  • Ability to provide consultation and training to members of the Esports team.
  • Ability to develop and monitor a budget

Responsibilities

40% Esports Program Management, Planning and Implementation
  • Develops, plans, and implements the evaluation and expansion of programs and services reflective of an increasingly diverse student population.
  • Leads the strategic direction and management of the Esports program designed to meet the needs of our student body.
  • Develops a comprehensive assessment of learning outcomes for Esports.
  • Provides overall direction for students in the Esports program, including the develoment and focus on of Key Student Affairs Learning Outcomes, Civic and Community Engagement, Leadership Development, Diversity and Global Consciousness, Professional and Administrative Skills and Fiscal Responsibilities
  • Builds and coordinates strategic partnerships through academic research in the areas of computer sciences, engineering, education, social sciences and the arts.
  • Builds and strengthens corporate relationships with endemic and non-endemic companies locally and globally.
  • Works closely with faculty and campus partners to identify opportunities for research in the areas of video gaming and Esports.
  • rovides particular focus to addressing the unique needs of CSUDH gaming student organizations on campus
  • Develops an outreach and recruitment plan to recruit potential athletes to attend CSUDH and work with the Office of Admissions and Relations with schools as needed.
  • Develops objectives and goals as they relate to the area of Esports on campus.
  • Coordinates opportunities for Esports athletes to have access to campus services including financial aid, housing academic and campus support services and wellness services.
  • Manages the competition team's travel needs and competition schedule.

25% Fundraising, Donor Relations, Scholarships and Internships
  • Collaborates with University Development Director and/or University Advancement to accomplish the following:
    • Opportunities for scholarships and fundraising related to Esports and benefiting current and future students who receive financial support as well as the faculty/developments that require adequate funding in order to attract and retain top talent students.
    • Opportunities for interaction with the Vice President for Student Affairs and other university leadership and key volunteers, to strengthen the prospects' and donors' understanding of, and relationship with, the University. o Seeking opportunities for major gift donors/prospects to serve in meaningful volunteer roles when appropriate.
    • Gift opportunities consistent with established needs and priorities.
    • Follow-up plans to secure gift commitments
    • Identify and secure extramural funding sources (corporate sponsorships, donations and scholarships) athletes.
    • Create and implement a strategic plan for establishing and sustaining internship opportunities for students.
    • Interface with other CSUDH programs to develop understanding of the needs of the students seeking internships.
  • Partner with local high schools to coordinate meet and greets, specials events, knowledge sharing with CSUDH Esports team.

10% Facilities and Event Management
  • Implements policies and procedures in accordance with fire safety and Environmental Health and Safety codes and regulations.
  • Ensures the upkeep of the CSUDH Incubator Lab and other department facilities.
  • Ensures that all computer hardware and software are updates and work closely with campus IT to guard against any security vulnerabilities.
  • Plans and develops events in and around Esports arena to help build the fan base for the campus team.
  • Assists in the development of a marketing plan to ensure that all events are well attended by the campus community.

10% General Management
  • Provides supervision and task assignments for staff and team members. Conducts annual performance evaluations.
  • Responsible for the recruitment, hiring, training, and supervision of all staff, coaches and team members.
