Basic Function:
BASIC FUNCTION:
Under the direction of the Director of Disabled Students Programs and Services, the Accommodation Specialist is responsible for administering individual accommodations prescribed for students with disabilities by DSPS counselors including implementing assistive technology, hiring and managing student scribes, and providing out-of-classroom testing coordination as needed.

REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES:
Assist students who are entitled to disability accommodations with implementing needed accommodations; provide assistive technology and instruct students how to use technology such as recorders, assistive listening devices, Braille refresh displays, and specialized software for people with disabilities; recruit, hire, and train student service providers, such as scribes; process paperwork for personnel actions including new hires and terminations.

Communicate with service providers and DSPS students regarding special needs, concerns and problems; research alternatives and develop workable solutions; follow-up to ensure effective results; maintain verbal and written confidentiality of service providers and DSPS students at all times.

Assist service providers, faculty, and counselors in the development of academic coping techniques for students with disabilities; connect students with disability-related campus services and resources including the Alternative Media Specialist, Testing & Placement Center, and Mobility Services (Public Safety); provide information to students regarding appropriate and available college resources, activities, academic planning and time management skills.

Maintain a variety of confidential records and update student files; prepare caseload reports; catalog and maintain a variety of assistive equipment available for student use.

Conduct accommodations correspondence, including voice, email, and USPS mail; respond to inquiries and provide information to students, faculty and staff; provide regular updates to DSPS director, counselors, and students on progress of obtaining scribes.

Generate promotional materials for DSPS program; conduct oral presentations to campus groups, clubs, and faculty as opportunity allows; Maintain current online job postings and seek out additional sources to promote employment opportunities; Participate in outreach efforts at special events to recruit student employees and provide information to DSPS students and the campus community.

Evaluate operations and activities of assigned function; recommend improvements and modifications; Perform related duties as assigned.


Education and Experience:
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Education:
Associate of Arts (AA) or Associate of Science (AS) degree in Psychology, Sociology, Human Services, Computer Information Systems or related field.

Experience:
One-year experience providing services to students with disabilities, preferably working in an office setting.

Note: Degrees and credits must be from accredited institutions (Title V Section 53406). Any degree from a country other than the United States, including Canada and Great Britain, must be evaluated by an evaluation service.

Knowledge and Abilities:
KNOWLEDGE OF:
•Policies and procedures of the DSPS Program.
•Problems and concerns of students with disabilities.
•Principles and methods of instruction as applied to disabled students, with special emphasis on assistive technology, alternative media, scribe/notetaker use, and accommodated testing.
•Basic recruiting and screening techniques.
•Banner, SARS, BC College Website, Catalog Course Descriptions.
•Operation of personal computer software programs including word processing, spreadsheet tools, email, and specialized software for students with disabilities.
•Interpersonal skills using tact, patience, and courtesy.
•Correct English usage, spelling, vocabulary, and grammar.
•Oral and written communication skills.
•Proper reception and telephone etiquette.
•Principles and procedures of confidentiality, record keeping and filing.

ABILITY TO:
•Work independently with little direction.
•Understand and relate to students with a wide range of disabilities.
•Maintain current knowledge of technological advances in the fields of assistive technology and alternative media.
•Analyze situations accurately and take appropriate action.
•Exercise judgement when interacting with administrators, faculty, staff and students regarding service provision to DSPS students.
•Demonstrate sensitivity to, and respect for, a diverse population, including students with learning disabilities, physical limitations, mental health issues, acquired brain injuries and other disabilities.
•Establish and maintain cooperative, confidential, and effective working relationships with others.
•Read, interpret, apply and explain rules regulations, policies and procedures.
•Maintain confidential student records and files.
•Prepare reports related to assigned activities.
•Communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
•Recruit, train and provide work direction for service providers.
•Prioritize work to meet schedules and timelines.


Salary Grade: 41.5
