Normal Work Schedule:

Monday - Friday, 8:00 a.m. - 4:30p.m. Weekend and evening events may occur depending on student and department needs.

Job Summary:

The Coordinator for Peer Mentoring will work collaboratively with the Director of First and Second Year Experience, administrators, faculty, and students in promoting academic and personal achievement for students within a learning centered environment. Additionally, this individual must coordinate a comprehensive and collaborative campus wide effort to develop and implement programmatic initiatives designed to support the successful retention of first and second year students.

Essential Functions:

  • Manage peer mentoring programs including designing content, training, assessing training processes, implementing best practices for peer mentors, and recruiting students to serve as mentors. 
  • Manages and coordinates communication between departments across campus, for all incoming students, first year students, second year students, transfer students, first and second year parents, including newsletters, social media, etc. 
  • Create and implement parent programming sessions during orientation. Develop agendas and handouts for parent orientation meetings.
  • Work with Assistant Vice Provost for Advising to create seamless transition for students through the advising process during orientation to provide a clean handoff into major programs. 
  • Assist with training, leading, developing, assessing, recruitment, selection of the Gamecock Orientation team.
  • Maintain first and second year experience website and publications. 
  • Serve as advisor for Freshman Forum and co-advisor for Lambda Sigma Sophomore Honor Society.
  • Stay up to date with best practices regarding transitioning students and their parents. 
  • Conduct training and development sessions for outside parties that are involved with the transition and retention processes of First and Second Year Experience. 
  • Serve as an advocate for first-year students, new transfer students, second-year students and parents/families.
  • Coordinate meeting by major and the registration process during orientation. Develop and implement an evaluation process for registration meetings. 
  • Work with the Assistant Vice Provost for Advising to obtain necessary updates about degree requirements, update appropriate social media channels and website with correct information. 
  • Other duties as assigned. 

Required Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree, and 
  • At least one (1) year experience working in a higher education student service-related environment.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree or enrollment in master’s program in related education field.
