THE SEARCH

 

The University of Wisconsin–Madison (UW-Madison), a public land-grant research and prolific research institution, seeks an accomplished and experienced individual to serve as its next Assistant Vice Chancellor for Business Services and University Controller (AVC & UC).

Reporting to the Associate Vice Chancellor for Finance, the AVC & UC is a key member of the financial leadership team and will be responsible for providing university-wide controllership and managing business services at UW-Madison. The AVC & UC supervises a team of approximately 130 employees, including nine direct reports, and oversees the following units: Disbursements Services, Financial Information Management, Bursar Services, Purchasing Services & Materials Distribution and Surplus Property, Risk Management, Content and Change Management, Communications, Training and Facilities, and Financial Internal Control Advisory Services.

The AVC & UC will be charged with enhancing systems and developing best practices to support the education, research, and service missions of the University, while ensuring high standards of compliance with local, state, and federal regulations. The AVC & UC will play a key role in assisting the University’s academic leadership and administrative management in the efficient and effective monitoring, management, and control of the financial resources of the University.

The successful candidate will lead an office committed to improving business processes and to providing outstanding service in an increasingly complex and demanding regulatory environment. The AVC & UC will strengthen collaborations and relationships across the University to better serve the mission and to communicate financial policies and procedures. The AVC & UC will work closely with administrative leaders in human resources, information technology, budget, and sponsored research, as well as school, college, and divisional financial and administrative personnel. In addition, this position will work closely with key personnel in the UW-System Office and interact occasionally with state officials. The AVC & UC will be an essential and trusted

 

 

advisor to the Associate Vice Chancellor for Finance, the Vice Chancellor of Finance and Administration and the Vice Chancellor for Legal Affairs.

The next AVC & UC will possess the experience and abilities to lead a large, multi-faceted, and complex office. A bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, business administration is required. A CPA is highly desirable, as is an MBA or other advanced degree. Candidates should possess a minimum of six years of financial management experience in higher education or another large, decentralized enterprise.
