These values are central to our mission. We strive for a climate of respect and inclusiveness that welcomes and supports members from diverse backgrounds and life experiences, is committed unreservedly to open and free inquiry, and deliberately seeks out multiple perspectives.

The Sociology program at Xavier University invites applications for two full-time, tenure-track or tenured positions at the Assistant or Associate level to start in Fall 2022. Research and teaching specialties in a wide variety of subfields of sociology will be considered. Specializations in the sociology of health and medicine, urban studies, immigration studies, or racial and ethnic minority studies are especially desired. The successful candidates will join the Department of Race, Intersectionality, Gender, and Sociology (RIGS), encompassing Xavier’s Sociology program and Gender and Diversity Studies (GDST) program. Candidates who can teach courses that contribute to both programs are particularly encouraged to apply.

Position Responsibilities:

Research-active tenure-track and tenured faculty at Xavier typically teach three courses each semester, with course reductions granted for additional administrative or institutional responsibilities. The successful candidate will be expected to teach introductory sociology, sociological research methods, and courses in their area(s) of expertise. An active scholarly agenda in their area(s) of interest and service to the department and university as appropriate to rank and position are also expected.

Required Qualifications:
  • Terminal degree (Ph.D.) in Sociology or closely aligned discipline by September 2022.
  • Open to candidates at both the tenure-track Assistant and tenured Associate level.
Desired Qualifications:
  • College-level teaching experience in area of specialty to diverse populations of students.
  • Willingness to engage students in active learning consistent with both the liberal arts tradition and Xavier’s mission.
  • Evidence of having worked with diverse populations in a broader community-engagement context.
