Boise State University, College of Health Sciences and School of Allied Health Sciences, invites applications for the position of Chair of the Department of Kinesiology (11 month appointment with tenure at the rank of Associate Professor or Professor). Boise State University is a Highly Active (Carnegie R2) Research Institution. The Department of Kinesiology is housed in the School of Allied Health Sciences, which is one of four schools in the College of Health Sciences. Offering a variety of graduate and undergraduate programs, the Department of Kinesiology is home to 20 faculty and staff members, 800 undergraduate students and 100 graduate students. The department offers graduate degrees in Athletic Leadership, Athletic Training, and Kinesiology, and offers a variety of undergraduate degree and certificate options in Kinesiology and Physical Education. We are seeking an individual to continue the strong record of supporting strategic growth, innovation, and advancement in teaching, research, and professional practice.

Duties: The Department Chair is the senior administrator of the academic unit and reports to the Director of the School of Allied Health Sciences, who is under the direction of the Dean of the College of Health Sciences. The Department Chair is responsible for budget allocations and management of resources, activities related to student recruitment and retention, faculty and staff orientation, evaluation, and development, resource enhancement, and the advancement of the Department’s mission and goals within the University and College. In addition, the Department Chair will lead the department's efforts to address the university's Blueprint for Success Strategic Plan. The Department Chair serves on the University Academic Leaders Council, and provides support, guidance and oversight for departmental committees in such matters as faculty/staff recruitment, promotion and tenure recommendations, and program development and curricula. The allocation of effort for instruction and research is negotiable, but the Department Chair typically teaches one 3-credit course per semester and while not a requirement to be a principal investigator or develop a research laboratory, is encouraged to stay active in scholarship. The Department’s administrative support team includes an Associate Chair, an Activity Class Coordinator, an Academic Advisor and Course Scheduler, and an Administrative Assistant.

Required Qualifications: In order to be considered for the position, candidates must have an earned doctorate in Kinesiology, a sub-specialty thereof, or closely related field, and possess a history of excellent contributions in teaching and research that are aligned with or otherwise complementary to the programs offered in the Department of Kinesiology. Candidates must have experience sufficient to qualify for the rank of Associate or Professor with tenure. Strong analytical, leadership, and interpersonal communication skills are required, and candidates must demonstrate a commitment to inclusive practices.

Preferred Qualifications: Ideal candidates will be able to demonstrate how their particular expertise can support the instructional needs of undergraduate and graduate programs in the department. Previous experience as program director, department chair, or other formal leadership roles is desired, but not essential. Demonstrated ability to lead the department with respect to meeting strategic plan goals.
