Assistant Director of Internships



Job Description:

Reporting to the Executive Director of the Shepherd Higher Education Consortium on Poverty, the Assistant Director of Internships oversees the internship program. Collaborating with over 20 partnering institutions, the Assistant Director is focused on advancing impactful internship programming. Actively engages with member schools, students and community partners to ensure meaningful student experiences and strong community outcomes.

Essential Functions:
  • Oversees SHECP Internship Program. Works collaboratively with consortium internship directors at each member institution and community partners to understand needs and opportunities for supporting internships that advance the Shepherd Higher Education Consortium on Poverty (SHECP) student learning objectives and community partner outcomes. Collaborates with the Executive Director (ED) on continuous improvement efforts to strategically modify and grow the internship program.

  • Curates collection of internship opportunities in line with SHECP strategic efforts. Develops marketing strategy and promotional materials for program.

  • Disseminates internship opportunities to consortium internship directors and supports postings to SHECP website. Coordinates and streamlines application process (with consultation with the ED). Engages and supports internship applicants and interns through the application, matching, and internship.

  • Collaborate with ED in planning and execution of opening and closing conferences.

  • Implement internship program evaluation and assessment process.

  • Works with ED to identify and align housing with internship opportunities. Coordinate with W&L administrative offices to ensure compliance with contracts (e.g. housing) and MOUs with community partners.

  • Supports interns as they navigate their housing and troubleshoot issues that may arise during the summer internship.

  • Engages collaboratively with member schools, the Internship Committee of the SHECP Governing Board, and community partners to support and advance impactful SHECP programming. Is focused on recognizing community strengths and needs for internship program outcomes.

  • Participates in community member conversations that allows SHECP to address community needs through a strengths-based, asset-based approach by amplifying community partner voice. Supports community partners as they engage and execute Community Learning Agreements (CLAs).

  • Collaborates with ED on allocating work tasks across the SHECP office team. Oversee SHECP internship program budget.

  • Supervises work study student(s) providing feedback and relevant work experience.

  • Additional related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor's degree required. A minimum of three years' professional and/or volunteer experience working in community development, college student engagement, or other related field or a combination of education and experience from which a similar background would be acquired. Excellent interpersonal, organizational and communication (verbal and written) skills, initiative, and attention to detail. Ability to manage multiple tasks and projects both independently and as a team. Ability to maintain discretion with confidential and sensitive information. Computing skills, including proficient use of Microsoft Word and Excel, are essential. Demonstrated ability to understand, work with, and meet the cultural needs of diverse student and community partner populations.

Work Schedule: M-F 8:30am-4pm

Working Conditions: Typical Office Environment

Types of Work: Sedentary work: Exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and/or a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects, including the human body. Sedentary work involves sitting most of the time. Jobs are sedentary if walking and standing are required only occasionally and all other sedentary criteria are met.
