Specifically, the Vice President serves as the chief academic officer for the University of Hawaiʻi System with primary responsibility for articulating and driving an overarching integrated academic strategy for the University of Hawaii System and its campuses to maximize equity, access and success for students on every island into and through education and training pathways and programs that lead to living wage jobs and support the needs of the State of Hawaiʻi.  The Vice President leads the process for formalizing a comprehensive integrated academic strategy for the entire University of Hawaiʻi and the planning, consultation, and intercampus coordination for its implementation. The Vice President also leads systemwide programs and initiatives to maximize the effectiveness of enrollment management and student support programs designed to maximize student access and success in the achievement of educational goals by learners on all islands.  The Vice President serves as an Officer of the University of Hawaiʻi and member of the President’s Cabinet.

Internally, the Vice President collaborates with campus, academic and student support leaders from throughout the university as well as with campus and system shared governance groups in the planning and implementation of strategies, programs and initiatives to meet the state's higher education needs.  Externally, the Vice President establishes and maintains effective relations and relationships locally, nationally and internationally to ensure a deep understanding of Hawaiʻi’s needs and how to apply evidence-based best practices while developing our own to ensure continuous improvement across the academic mission.

Operationally, the Vice President supervises systemwide planning and policy, institutional research and analysis, the statewide Hawai‘i P-20 partnerships for education, and systemwide student affairs, including collaborating with UH campuses to drive a holistic statewide enrollment management strategy.

The ideal candidate will have a strong understanding of the current higher education landscape, best practices in post-pandemic transformation, and the use of data to drive improvement including student-related data, measures of effectiveness and employment-related data.  The ideal candidate possesses a thirst for innovation, innate creativity, a commitment to collaboration, and a proven record of success as a transformational leader and collaborator.
