The Durham School of Architectural Engineering and Construction at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln (UNL) (https://engineering.unl.edu/durhamschool) invites applications for a tenure-track faculty position at the rank of assistant professor in the area of Building Structures beginning in Fall 2022. The Durham School is co-located in two cities, Lincoln and Omaha, which are approximately 50 miles apart. With approximately 30 faculty, 500 undergraduate students, and 100 graduate students, the Durham School is the only endowed academic unit ($30 million) in the UNL College of Engineering and has strong ties with several world-class architecture/engineering/construction firms, many of which are headquartered in Omaha, including HDR, DLR, Leo A Daly, Kiewit, J.E. Dunn, McCarthy, and many others.  A prime example of the strength of our collaboration with industry is that the capstone course in the school’s architectural engineering program has been a recipient of the NCEES Engineering Education Award in five of the last six years; the Durham School is the only one to have won the $25k Grand Prize more than once.

The successful candidate is expected to be based in Omaha and to teach undergraduate and graduate courses in the Durham School; conduct original impactful research; actively participate in service, outreach, and community engagement; and demonstrate a commitment to excellence in all areas of the university mission.

Candidates are expected to have a Ph.D. or equivalent degree in architectural engineering, civil engineering, or a closely related field. They will have a strong record of scholarly achievement, potential for establishing an externally-funded research program, and a demonstrated commitment to excellence in teaching and participating in collaborative activities across disciplines. Candidates must also demonstrate readiness to advance inclusive excellence and diversity, as these are core values in our school, college, and university.

Preferred candidates will have research and/or teaching experience in at least one of the following areas: timber, masonry, advanced composites, advanced structural analysis methods, and/or sustainable building materials.  Preference will also be given to candidates who have industry experience, and to those who are licensed as a professional engineer in the United States.

Numerous opportunities for collaborations across the University of Nebraska exist, including with the Nebraska Transportation Center and Midwest Roadside Safety Facility; the Nebraska Center for Materials and Nanoscience; Nebraska Innovation Campus; and other state- and federally-funded research centers and programs. Faculty at the University of Nebraska have access to many resources, including the Holland Computing Center, which manages supercomputing facilities.

Applications must be submitted via http://employment.unl.edu. Complete applications will include a cover letter; CV; research, teaching, and diversity statements; and a list of three references. Note: please combine teaching, research, and diversity statements into a single pdf document and attach as “Other Document.” Applicants are strongly encouraged to review the rubrics used by our search committees to evaluate candidate statements: https://engineering.unl.edu/candidate-statements/. Review of application materials will begin November 15, 2021 and continue until the position is filled. After review of applications begins, those with any missing required statement may not be given full consideration.  Please address inquiries regarding this search to the chair of the search committee: Dr. George Morcous, gmorcous2@unl.edu, (402) 554-2544.
