Reporting to the Director of Sexual Orientation, Gender Identity & Expression (SOGIE), the Assistant Director of SOGIE Education & Support is a university leader, providing support and advocacy for LGBTQIA+ identified students, faculty, and staff and is a resource to the entire James Madison University community.
Education & Coordination:
- Reporting to the Director of SOGIE, the Assistant Director of SOGIE Education & Support is a university leader, providing support and advocacy for LGBTQIA+ identified students, faculty, and staff and is a resource to the entire James Madison University community. The Assistant Director position will: Provide leadership and oversight of planning and implementation of SOGIE related educational programming.
- Create and implement a programming calendar for the year in collaboration with the GA’s & student staff.
- Lead the student staff in coordinating educational and social events and manage partnerships with faculty through the SOGIE Peer Educator program.
- Provide operational support of the SOGIE resource space (Lavender Lounge).
Supervision & Administration:
- Serves as the supervisor to the 2 graduate assistants and student employees. The Assistant Director will provide ongoing support, feedback, and opportunities for professional growth. The area of supervision and administration also includes planning staff training, retreats, reserving spaces on campus & professional development opportunities.
Collaboration:
- Provides leadership and consultation to the university and campus partners on LGBTQ+ related topics and student needs through service on committees, providing trainings to faculty, staff, students, and other partners.
Departmental Support:
- Actively participate in departmental and unit meetings and planning activities. The Assistant Director will support all SOGIE initiatives and will plan and implement activities that align with the mission of SOGIE in addition to the overall goals of the DEI unit.
Direct Student Support:
- Serves as a resource for students.
- Builds relationships & partnerships with the LGBTQIA+ student organizations.
- Facilitate trainings on SOGIE and associated topics to student staff, student organizations, and academic classes
- Advise the SOGIE Peer Educators & Volunteers as needed
- Other duties as assigned
Required:
- Earned master’s degree in higher education, or a related field, that will serve to enhance LGBTQ Education and awareness & visibility of LGBTQ initiatives
- Demonstrated experience in the area of Diversity, Equity & Inclusion, with expertise in LGBTQ education
Preferred:
- Minimum of 2 years of experience regularly supervising student staff
- Event management and program planning experience
- Leadership in higher education with the ability to serve as an effective advocate for student success
