DEPARTMENT OVERVIEW : The Health Department has approximately 200 undergraduate and graduate students in school health education, community health, healthcare management, and human service studies programs. The Department also provides required courses for a number of degree programs across the college. Major Responsibilities
  • Teach courses and assess learning in the undergraduate and graduate school health education programs. Priority areas of instruction are Methods and Materials of Health Education, Curriculum Construction in Health Education, and the School Health Program. Other areas will depend on individual expertise and could include coursework related to health communication, community health, research methods, or health promotion.
  • Advise undergraduate and graduate students enrolled in the programs and culminating experience advisement and assessment.
  • Engage in scholarly work and activities as appropriate to the application and receipt of tenure and promotion at SUNY Cortland.
  • Provide service to the Health Department, the local/state/national school health education profession, the School of Professional Studies, the SUNY Cortland campus community, and/or the State University of New York.
  • Commitment to inclusive excellence.

Functional and Supervisory Relationships
  • Reports to the academic department chair
  • Works closely with department faculty
Required Qualifications
  • Earned Doctorate (PhD, EdD). Candidates who are ABD may be considered with expected completion of doctorate one year from appointment date. Please note: Reappointment will not be considered without completed doctorate prior to review date.
  • Professional preparation, and/or experience in health education.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Public school health teaching experience.
  • Experience teaching at the college level.
  • Certified Health Education Specialist ( CHES )/Master Certified ( MCHES )
  • Experience teaching diverse and disadvantaged students.
  • Experience with designing and delivering online programs and courses.
