The Department of Human Services in the School of Education & Human Development (SEHD) at the University of Virginia seeks applicants for a faculty position in our CACREP-accredited program in Counselor Education. This is a tenure-eligible position that will be filled at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor. 

 

The individual in this position will sustain an active program of scholarship that focuses on school counseling with an emphasis on issues of race, place, and/or equity in K-12 educational settings; publish research results in peer-reviewed journals appropriate to the discipline; teach graduate courses and advise students in the M.Ed. Counselor Education program; teach undergraduate courses and serve as a faculty affiliate with the Youth and Social Innovation undergraduate program; include graduate and undergraduate students in research activities; make appropriate service contributions to the program, school, and profession; and incorporate issues of diversity, race, and equity in research, teaching, and service.

 

Required qualifications:

  • Doctoral degree in Counselor Education and Supervision or closely related discipline by the start date of the position
  • An emerging or established program of scholarship that focuses on school counseling with an emphasis on issues of race, place, and/or equity in K-12 educational settings
  • Demonstrated ability to publish research results in peer-reviewed journals appropriate to the discipline
  • Evidence of an explicit commitment to integrate principles of diversity, equity, and inclusion into teaching, research, and service activities
  • Evidence of commitment to addressing the academic, social-emotional, mental health, or postsecondary development of K-12 students through a racial equity lens.
 

Appointment at the Associate Professor level requires evidence of a research program with a track record of demonstrated success in publications in top journals appropriate to the discipline and efforts to obtain sponsored support. 

 

Preferred qualifications:

  • PK-12 school counseling experience
  • License or certification in a counseling field
  • Teaching experience in a higher education setting or equivalent in courses related to the eight counseling core areas, school counseling, and/or practicum and internship.
 

The M.Ed. program in Counselor Education teaches students how to become leaders, advocates, and collaborators – emphasizing equity, access, and justice as a K-12 school counselor. Program faculty are highly engaged in SEHD and University leadership positions related to diversity, equity and inclusion.  In addition, four research centers facilitate faculty research on topics related to diversity, equity, and inclusion in the SEHD by providing support for multi-disciplinary and collaborative research: Youth-Nex Center for Positive Youth Development; Center for the Advancement of Teaching & Learning (CASTL); EdPolicyWorks; and the Center for Race and Public Education in the South (CPRES).

 

This position is one of three new tenure-eligible positions in the Department of Human Services with a shared focus on the development of diverse and historically underrepresented youth in family, school or community contexts: the other two faculty positions will be in Youth & Social Innovation and Clinical & School Psychology.

 

The individuals entering these three tenure-eligible positions will benefit from a strong and supportive network of diverse faculty at the SEHD who hold leadership positions in the School’s Office of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion and Center for Race and Public Education in the South (CPRES); and in University’s Equity Center and Office of African-American Affairs, which is part of the University’s Office of Diversity, Equity & Inclusion.

COVID Vaccination Requirement
 

The University of Virginia expects all current and new employees (UVA Health System and Academic), to be vaccinated against COVID-19. 
 
If hired to work within the University Health System, you will be required to provide proof of vaccination or be willing to receive the vaccination. Employees may request a medical or religious exemption from vaccination.
 
If hired to work on the Academic side of the University, excluding the School of Medicine, School of Nursing, UPG, and the Health Systems Library, you will be required to provide proof of vaccination or be willing to submit to mandatory, weekly prevalence testing. Employees that are working 100% remotely will not be subject to weekly prevalence testing; however, if the employee works on UVA Grounds (including the Medical Center) even intermittently, then they are required to be tested for COVID-19 once per week on an indefinite basis and follow masking mandates.
