Direct and oversee programs and assist with directing the day-to-day operations of a department or unit.
ResponsibilitiesThe Associate Director of Housing reports to the Director and has primary responsibility for the day to day operation of the Residence Life program; including themed communities, residential curriculum, student and professional staff hiring, onboarding, and training, academic initiatives, assessment, conduct, advising the Residence Hall Association, engagement programming and budget, RA course, serving on departmental and University committees, and other duties as assigned.
Typical Allocation of Duties:
Direct day-to-day operations - 30%
Assist in directing the day-to-day operations of the department or
unit.
Oversee and monitor - 15%
Oversee and monitor departmental or unit initiatives, programs, and
events.
Manage activities - 15%
Manage various activities for a specific department, unit, or
function. Participate in the provision of professional services as
required.
Supervise employees - 15%
Supervise and coordinate the selection, training, and development
of employees.
Represent the department - 10%
Represent the department at meetings, functions, or other
activities.
Assist with the budget - 10%
Provide assistance with budget development and monitoring.
Assume duties - 5%
Assume the duties of the Chief Officer or Director in their
absence.
Supervisor Expectations:
- Supervise Housing Supervisors, Administrative Assistant, Graduate Students, and (indirectly) Student Staff
- Oversee all of the aspects regarding the establishment and sustainability of residential learning communities in Housing including assessment of student learning outcomes and program impact on retention and graduation
- Oversee the HEART staffing structure and response
- Identify opportunities and develop ideas for learning initiatives specific to each student classification (first year students, sophomores, juniors and seniors)
- Coordinate all residence hall classroom space usage for these programs and other needs as well
- Identify and develop initiatives intended to increase faculty-student interactions
- Academic support and recognition programs, services, and initiatives for residential students
- Partner with Academic Affairs and Student Life stakeholders on the development, implementation and assessment of Living Learning Communities and Themed Living Communities
- Develop and facilitate campus-wide program initiatives including all traditional events, programs intended to support academic achievement and the development of personal/ social skills, including diversity initiatives and roommate workshops
- Maintain academic standing records of all student staff, both undergraduate and graduate
- Assist staff members in need of academic intervention strategies
- Manage department programming budget to effectively coordinate programming opportunities for all residents
- Coordinate, administer, interpret and present all assessment activities within Office of Housing and Residence Life, including development of yearly assessment plan (including such items as the EBI Resident Survey, GPA studies, focus groups, etc.)
- Utilize technology to facilitate and strengthen assessment initiatives
- Coordinate RHA and Hall Council trainings and retreats
- Coordinate various aspects of training and professional development for department
- Directly responsible for developing course outline and oversees the instruction of the RA class
- Serves on department, division, and university committees and task forces
- Training efforts, both at peak times (August and January) and ongoing for all levels of student and entry level professional staff in Residence Life
- Coordinate the Professional Staff and RHD on call program
- Serve in the on-call rotation
- Residential Curriculum enhancement and future development in association with the Residential Education team
- Participate in departmental meetings
- Serve as the senior residential conduct officer
Required Qualifications
Required Experience
Bachelor's degree in a specified field and five (5) years of
related work experience. Professional licensure, certification,
and/or designation may be required in some areas.
Employment is contingent upon successful completion of a background check. Position May Require Credit Check (if using P-Card, working with Cash, etc.).
Position Requires completion of VSU’s Annual Compliance Training course (such as State Business Transactions, Drug Free Workplace, Anti-Harassment Policy, Introduction to Information Security, Workers Compensation, Motor Vehicle Policy, USG Ethics Policy, Conflict of Interest/ Outside Activities Policy, Leave Procedures for Faculty and Staff, Georgia Open Records Act, Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA), and Contracts 101. Supervisory positions require training in FMLA and Worker’s Compensation.
