As a vital part of the Center for Careers, Life, and Service’s (CLS) integrated model of personal, professional, and civic development, the Associate Director of Service and Social Innovation (SSI) serves as a senior member of the SSI staff, helping to craft and develop strategic priorities for students’ civic education.  This position is responsible for crafting and leading developmentally appropriate, scaffolded, service and social innovation programming that is both educational and experiential, through which students may connect their values, interests, skills, and liberal arts education with their short- and long-term civic aspirations.  In addition, they will provide identity-informed student advising and direct leadership for signature service and social innovation programs including but not limited to Service Leadership Work-Study, Civic Ambassadors, Civic Cohorts, Civic Conversations, and Alternative Break.   This position will collaborate with other campus departments (such as Student Affairs, Development and Alumni Relations or Admissions) to collaborate and align civic education efforts with the service and social innovation programming offered through the CLS.  As a member of the CLS staff, the individual will be expected to support the center’s mission and broader outreach to the Grinnell community.

  • Master’s degree and three years of experience.
  • The ability to build relationships of trust with community members, students, staff, and faculty.
  • A dedication to co-creating opportunities that engage and equip the next generation of socially just changemakers.
  • The ability to co-create civic opportunities that engender intentional and radical self-reflection; diversity, equity, and inclusion; collaborative, power-aware partnerships; reciprocity; and sustainability.
  • The ability to help students explore the particularities of and intersections between service, activism or advocacy, and systems thinking in long-term change-making.
  • The ability to challenge the status quo and constructively co-create new ways of thinking and doing when systems or programs are not working.
