Reporting to an administrator, the Custodial Services Supervisor serves as primary manager and District resource for planning, assessing, scheduling, and evaluating cleaning and general maintenance of District buildings, facilities, and surrounding properties. The Supervisor complies with all applicable codes, health and safety regulations, collective bargaining agreements, Equal Opportunity policies, and accreditation recommendations and standards in assessing, directing and implementing quality ongoing sanitation and special cleaning, inventory and set-up services such as washing, dusting, mopping, repairing, polishing, waxing, disinfecting, and scrubbing classrooms, restrooms, fountains, swimming pool and athletic areas, interior wall and floor coverings, furniture, fixtures, and windows; and moving, transporting, and arranging furniture, equipment, supplies and other materials for special and regular events. The position manages a full schedule of routine and special cleaning and general maintenance services that prepare and maintain District buildings, facilities and surrounding property at standards that support the District mission.

Essential Functions

  • Confer with senior and other department management staff to plan short- and long-range custodial services and scheduled maintenance. Collaborate with staff to plan, calendar, supervise, schedule and evaluate staffing needs, timelines, and costs for special arrangements of furniture, fixtures, equipment and other materials required for special events and activities. Confer with department managers and staff regarding communication of custodial schedules, priority of service requests, and other customer services, including training and instructional manuals, notices, bulletins and other materials.
  • Train, supervise, schedule, coordinate and evaluate the work of custodial and other staff as assigned. Plan and implement a regular program of safety, equipment usage and other training and licensing for staff. Plan and supervise individual and team workloads at various sites, and the efficient utilization of staff, supplies and materials.
  • Direct, schedule, inspect and monitor custodial services such as individual and team cleaning, trash collection and disposal, vacuuming, dusting, mopping, polishing, waxing, disinfecting, sanitizing, scrubbing, washing, and routine repairing of classrooms, meeting rooms, offices, gymnasium and athletic facilities, fountains, swimming pools, public areas, and surrounding grounds.
  • Direct, schedule and document the replacement of lights, fixtures, furniture, equipment, floor and wall coverings,
  • Plan and maintain a department budget. Estimate costs and funding sources for special custodial service projects and staffing.
  • Plan and direct the inventory, storage, disposal and security of department equipment, vehicles, materials and supplies.
  • Assess, recommend, lead and participate in the research, bid processes, selection and evaluation of vendors and contractors. Assess and recommend the purchase or lease of equipment, vehicles, materials and supplies.
  • Use a variety of computer software to set up and maintain documentation of routine custodial services and special projects, health and safety compliance, equipment, supplies and materials; contractor and vendor resources; cost estimates and projections; equipment, supply and materials inventories; and scheduled maintenance.
  • Compile data for, format, prepare and present special and regular reports on budget, cost estimates, purchases, scheduled maintenance, inventory; chemical, furniture and other disposals; vendors and contractors, and other matters as assigned.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Requirements & Desirables

1. Possession of a certificate of completion from an accredited training school or program in custodial services or a closely related trade.

2. Successful supervisory experience of increasing responsibility in custodial services that has demonstrated a thorough knowledge of safety regulations, applicable health, sanitation and safety codes, cleaning and safety equipment, common chemicals and cleaning solutions, tools, supplies and materials required for routine and special cleaning and general maintenance of surfaces, facilities and surrounding property areas. Demonstrated skill in training, directing, scheduling and evaluating the work of staff; oral communication, including giving clear and concise instructions; facilities cleaning and maintenance inspection; reading, comprehending and applying instructional materials and warning labels; use of computer software to prepare correspondence, memoranda, documentation and reports; inventory, safe storage, security and disposal of cleaning and maintenance supplies, materials and equipment; thorough knowledge of safety procedures used for moving and transporting heavy equipment and objects; and ability to repair custodial equipment and materials.

3. Extensive experience in public contacts that has demonstrated skill in respectful and sensitive communication with people who are diverse in their cultures, language groups, abilities, lifestyle and backgrounds. Demonstrated sensitivity to, and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability and ethnic backgrounds of community college students.

1. Previous experience in the supervision of custodial services for an educational institution.
2. Possession of an Associate degree from an accredited college or university.
3. Possession of a forklift license from an accredited training program (or ability to obtain.)

Prior to employment, the selected candidate will be required to complete the following:

  1. In accordance with Federal Law all employees must provide proof of eligibility to work in the United States.
  2. Criminal Justice/Fingerprint Clearance.
  3. COVID-19 Vaccination Status: All employees new to the District who access campuses or other District facilities, and/or participate in off-site work in-person for the District, must be fully vaccinated against COVID-19, prior to employment unless approved as exempt due to verified medical or religious reasons (as defined in federal or state laws and regulations).
  4. California Education Code, Section 87408.6 requires persons employed by a community college in an academic or classified position to submit to a TB risk assessment developed by CDPH and CTCA and, if risk factors are present, an examination to determine that he or she is free of infectious TB; initially upon hire and every four years thereafter.
  5. DISASTER SERVICE WORKERS: All Marin Community College District (MCCD) employees are designated Disaster Service Workers through state and local law (California Government Code Section 3100-3109). Employment with the MCCD requires the affirmation of a loyalty oath to this effect. Employees are required to complete all Disaster Service Worker-related training as assigned, and to return to work as ordered in the event of an emergency.     The Custodial Services Supervisor is a non-represented, Classified Supervisory position, in compliance with all applicable sections of the California Education Code and related statutes. Supervisory employees are members of the California Public Employees Retirement System (CalPERS), to which the member contributes up to 7% of his/her reportable compensation on a monthly basis.

    Salary Range: Supervisory Level 1
    Starting Salary Range: $75,367 - $83,109 annually (Step 1 to Step 3). Background and experience will determine placement. Step 3 is the maximum entering step.
