Paramedic Assistant Professor/Program Director

Description of Position:
This position is open until filled.

This is a full-time, tenure track certificated position in the Emergency Medical Education Department at Contra Costa College in San Pablo, CA. The job requires administering the Paramedic program as well as teaching a partial load, part of which may be assigned in the evening and/or weekends The load for the first 2 full academic years will be a 80/20 distribution, with 80% being dedicated to Paramedic Program Director duties and 20% to teaching. Once Paramedic program accreditation is achieved, the distribution will revert to 60/40 for subsequent years (60% program director duties and 40% teaching duties). Additionally, this individual will be required to maintain regular office hours and participate in college and department governance activities. The position is assigned to the Emergency Medical Education Department (EMED). The teaching assignment for the position will typically include courses such as Emergency Medical Responder and Paramedic Training.

Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Responsible for the administration, organization and supervision of the educational program.
  • Responsible for the continuous quality review and improvement of the educational program.
  • Responsible for long-range planning and ongoing development of the program.
  • Responsible for the effectiveness of the program and for having systems in place to demonstrate the effectiveness of the program.
  • Teach theory content in day and evening times, develop test questions, and maintain item analysis of examinations.
  • Cooperatively and constructively work with the medical director, instructors and personnel in clinical agencies, the California EMSA and the NREMT
  • Maintain adequate controls to assure the quality of the delegated responsibilities.
  • Assume responsibility for planning, directing implementing, evaluating and changing, when necessary, the Paramedic courses.
  • Collaborate with Medical Director in preparing and administering a program budget.
  • Prepare reports and self- studies as required by the college, the California EMS Authority, NREMT, and CoAEMSP/CAAHEP
  • Guide and evaluate student progress clinically and academically.
  • Coordinate and facilitate advanced level NREMT testing.
  • Act in a leadership capacity to instructors and coordinators
  • Responsible for meeting deadlines and submitting data for enrollment, census, midterm and final grading.
  • Function as a participating member of the College; e.g. committee membership, faculty meeting contribution, Advisory Committee responsibilities etc.
  • Commit to continued professional and faculty development.
  • Possess flexibility in adjusting to working in varied clinical areas at varied times
  • Coordinate the activities of students challenging required courses or requesting evaluated credit
  • Perform other duties as assigned by department chair.
  • Develop and maintain satisfactory working relationships with the community and affiliated clinical agencies.

    Duties and Responsibilities:
    In addition to contractual duties, all full-time faculty are expected to participate actively in their disciplines, department activities, and the general intellectual life and governance of the college. Part of the teaching assignment may be in the evening and/or online. Duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to:
    1. advancing equitable student learning through dedicated, exemplary instruction in accordance with established course outlines;
    2. participating in the assessment of student learning outcomes for courses and programs; developing and implementing student learning outcomes assessment processes for courses and programs;
    3. collaborating in the development and revision of curriculum and in program review;
    4. engaging in department program improvement initiatives;
    5. participating in department, division, and college committees;
    6. participating in professional development activities, both departmental and college-wide;
    7. maintaining current knowledge in the subject matter area and effective teaching/ learning strategies;

    Minimum Qualification-Education/Experience:
    (Cited from California Code of Regulations Title 22, Division 9 Prehospital Emergency Medical Services- Section 100150- Teaching Staff requirements).
    (b) Each training program shall have an approved course director who shall be licensed in California as a physician, a registered nurse who has a baccalaureate degree or a paramedic who has a baccalaureate degree, or shall be an individual who holds a baccalaureate degree in a related health field or in education. The course director shall be qualified by education and experience in methods, materials, and evaluation of 13 Effective February 8, 2016 instruction, and shall have a minimum of one (1) year experience in an administrative or management level position and have a minimum of three (3) years academic or clinical experience in prehospital care education within the last five (5) years. Duties of the course director shall include, but not be limited to: (1) Administration, organization and supervision of the educational program. (2) In coordination with the program medical director, approve the principal instructor, teaching assistants, field and hospital clinical preceptors, clinical and internship assignments, and coordinate the development of curriculum, including instructional objectives, and approve all methods of evaluation. (3) Ensure training program compliance with this chapter and other related laws. (4) Sign all course completion records. (5) Ensure that the preceptor(s) are trained according to the curriculum in subsection (e)(4). © Each training program shall have a principal instructor(s), who may also be the program medical director or course director if the qualifications in subsections (a) and (b) are met, who shall: (1) Be a physician, registered nurse, physician assistant, or paramedic, currently certified or licensed in the State of California. (2) Be knowledgeable in the course content of the United States Department of Transportation (U.S. DOT) National Emergency Medical Services Education Standards DOT HS 811 077A, January 2009, herein incorporated by reference; and (3) Have six (6) years experience in an allied health field and an associate degree or two (2) years experience in an allied health field and a baccalaureate degree. (4) Be responsible for areas including, but not limited to, curriculum development, course coordination, and instruction. (5) Be qualified by education and experience in methods, materials, and evaluation of instruction, which shall be documented by at least forty (40) hours of instruction in teaching methodology. Following, but not limited to, are examples of courses that meet the required instruction in teaching methodology: (A) California State Fire Marshal (CSFM) “Training Instructor 1A, 1B, and 1C”, (B) National Fire Academy (NFA) “Fire Service Instructional Methodology” course, and 14 Effective February 8, 2016 © A course that meets the U. S. Department of Transportation/National Highway Traffic Safety Administration 2002 Guidelines for Educating EMS Instructors, such as the National Association of EMS Educators’ EMS Educator Course. (d) Each CCP training program shall have a principal instructor(s) who shall be licensed in California as a physician and knowledgeable in the subject matter, a registered nurse knowledgeable in the subject matter, or a paramedic with current CCP certification or FP certification from the BCCTPC.

    Desirable Qualifications:
    • Master’s Degree in Allied Health Field
    • Minimum of 3 years teaching or coordinating EMS courses.
    • Knowledge concerning national curricula, national accreditation, national registration, and the requirements for state and national certification and/or licensure in California and NREMT.
    • Knowledge of all levels of EMS instruction with emphasis on Paramedic training.
    • Knowledge of educational principles and instructional design for adult learners.
    • Knowledge of methods of instruction.
