The Laboratory for Computational Sensing and Robotics is seeking aResearch Assistant who will perform research in medical robotics, with a particular focus on system integration and control. The position involves work on one project funded by JHU internal funds (1207350590) and another project SOM NIH R01 LCSR Allocation Image-Guided Workstation and Tools for Bone Defects (IO 90085257, grant 132871).

Specific Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Design, fabricate and test custom printed circuit boards (PCBs).
  • Design, implement and test FPGA firmware.
  • Design, implement and test software in C++, Python or Matlab.
  • Integrate electronics, firmware and software to perform research in medical robotics.
  • Position will receive work assignments on weekly basis and will be expected to complete most of them independently.
  • Interface with faculty, students, engineers, designers, and lab personnel
  • Primary research interactions will take place within the Laboratory for Computational Sensing and Robotics (lcrs.jhu.edu).

Minimum Qualifications (Mandatory):

  • Bachelor's Degree in related discipline.
  • Some related experience.
  • Additional education may substitute for required experience and additional related experience may substitute for required education, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in Robotics, Mechatronics, Electrical Engineering or equivalent demonstrated understanding of robots and other medical equipment systems.
  • Solid understanding of engineering principles needed to design, fabricate, and validate work.
  • Strong background in electronics design, FPGA design, and software development.
  • Previous experience working on or with robotic and/or mechatronics systems.
  • At least 1-year experience in an academic research environment preferred.

Special Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Strong analytical/problem solving skills.
  • Knowledge of Altium Designer for designing custom PCBs.
  • PCB assembly skills, including ability to solder surface mount components.
  • Knowledge of Verilog for implementing FPGA firmware.
  • Knowledge of C++ for software development.
  • Knowledge of Matlab and Python desirable.
  • Ability to work independently under minimal supervision. Able to conduct experiments autonomously according to precise instructions. Able to exercise independent judgment to resolve minor problems arising while conducting experiments.
  • Ability to multi-task and maintain attention to detail.
  • Preference given for experience inacademic or industry research environment.
  • Project management skills and the ability to meet project deadlines.
  • Ability to prioritize jobs and organize work effectively to meet deadlines.
  • Ability to communicate with scientists and researchers from a variety of disciplines.
  • Ability to manage own area effectively using compliance with health and safety policy and university procedures.
  • Self-motivation and an ability to exercise initiative and judgment in carrying out research tasks.
  • Ability to write clearly and concisely to a level consistent with publications in highly regarded international journals.
  • Demonstrated ability to conduct independent research.

JHU Equivalency Formula: 30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience.  Additional related experience may substitute for the required education on the same basis. For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job.
