Augustana University Department of Religion, Philosophy, and Classics invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant or Associate Professor beginning Fall 2022. The department seeks to hire a scholar and teacher with primary expertise in Islam and secondary expertise in Christianity, as well as familiarity with an interfaith approach to teaching. A doctoral degree in religion, theology, or similar discipline is required.

Successful applicants will demonstrate strong commitment to excellent teaching in a liberal arts environment and to mentoring undergraduate students, including in advising, research and pre-professional clinical experience. The candidate will be expected to teach religion courses to both majors and non-majors, and will also have an opportunity to teach courses in our First-Year Seminar program as well as our interdisciplinary Civitas honors program. Candidates must be able to teach Religion 110: Exploring the Christian Faith, a required class for all Augustana students. The ideal candidate will expand existing course offerings by adding at least one course on Islamic studies and offer courses that support or expand our growing InterReligious studies options. Teaching load is 3 classes each Fall and Spring and 1 course in January term. The candidate can expect to teach at least 4 sections of Religion 110 per year.

Augustana is a Lutheran university (ELCA), rooted in the Lutheran heritage of commitment to truth over dogma; therefore, openness to others’ perspectives is a central tenet of our community. Our students and faculty represent a wide range of religious and non-religious backgrounds. It is essential that candidates be able to interact with people with different backgrounds and perspectives and that they be interested in supporting students from systemically non-dominant groups. Our department is committed to diversity, equity, and inclusion, and we are looking for a candidate who will help us continue to work toward these goals. We strongly encourage applications from the entire spectrum of a diverse community. Augustana University is an Equal Opportunity/Affirmative Action/Title IX Employer.

Augustana’s location in Sioux Falls, South Dakota (www.siouxfalls.com) provides an exceptionally high quality of living in an affordable community environment. Sioux Falls has more than 70 parks, over 40 miles of greenways, a walkable downtown that features musical and cultural events, and award winning restaurants. Our metro area (population 273,000) is one of the fastest growing regions in the country and is recognized as a major medical, retail, and financial center.

Augustana offers an excellent benefit package including health insurance, dental insurance, life insurance, AD&D, short- and long-term disability, retirement plan, tuition assistance, holiday, vacation and sick pay.

Application Procedure: Review of applications will begin November 1 and continue until position is filled.
Please submit a cover letter addressing qualifications and fit for the position as described above, along with:
